Should .50 Cal weapons be banned?

I saw a mention of 45/70 one of my favorite calibers.
.

.............................................
This is off the subject, but I had a friend shot through both of his upper thighs by a 45/70. He was falling timber, and stopped to gas up his saw. I don't know if he had orange on or not. It was hunting season.

About then he was nocked to the ground as the bullet passed through both legs, breaking them. An excited hunter came bounding up. He expected to find an elk, but upon seeing my friend, Dean laying in the snow with blood everywhere, the guy started to freak out. Dean had to calm the guy down and send him for help. I don't know if any first aid was applied or not.

Quite a while later a para-medic arrived. She assumed Dean was dead because of the blood loss and damage to his legs. She knelt down and touched his neck for a pulse. She about freaked out when he openned his eyes. The bullet had missed both femoral arteries and passed cleanly through.

A lighter, more fragile bullet, moving at a faster speed, would have undoubtedly done more damage. A 45/70 is designed for big heavy critters. Luckily for Dean bullet just zipped right through without expanding much. He made a full recovery from this. He also sued the hunter who shot him for a ton of money. That guy did the right thing though, by coming back, instead of leaving him to die.....Steve1

I think that California is the only state that has banned them so far. Others are trying.

California has banned .50 BMG. .510 DTC EUROP aka .50 DTC is legal with the same bullet in a case that's .100" shorter.

When did california ban the .50 bmg? I am a bmg owner several times over living in california and I wasnt aware they were banned. I knew the semi auto's were banned in the .50 bmg but it was still possible to purchase a single shot. As a matter of fact, just last week I was in one of my gun shops I deal with picking up a keg of powder and there were several on the shelf for sale. I also know that factory and milsurp ammo is still being sold for these rifles as I just bought 500 rounds of milsurp. Is my gunshop selling illegally? And why arent the .50 owners notified that the selling of .50 bmg firearms in the state of california is now illegal? I own 6 of them and havent heard a peep on my end?

2004.

You had until December 31st 2004 to buy one and April 30th of 2006 to register the ones you already own.

If you neglected to do that you'll have to accept being a criminal (who might not want to use his illegal guns in public and may want to travel to another state where he can legally sell them to a licensed dealer) or turn them over to law enforcement officials for destruction.

Maybe.

Since all sales must be done through licensed dealers they can be the ones to keep track of what's currently legal and illegal to sell.

Ignorance of the law is no excuse. To catch you up on that here's what your Attorney General has to say on the subject:

And here's the law for the legal minded:

You have nothing to worry about. Kelpdiver said clearly the very strict anti-2nd laws are just a nuisance They are really not that big of deal. I have several firearms that are not legal in Cali. Just a nuisance though?
That spot isn't bad at all, the winds were strong and that was the issue! It was just on the downwind side.

The bill was called, ironically, AB50. Search for it with Google.

Pre-owned .50's could be kept, if you registered them.

Those .50 guns you saw might have been similar, but legal, alternative calibers.

And there is also some kind of quirk regarding the CA assault weapon law, whereby if you make the .50 rifle look like an assault rifle, with a fixed magazine, then it's legal again. Or something like that. I don't know the details on it.

The better with which to ensnare the unknowing owners for arrest and incarceration!

yea, squirels can be quite problematic:D
