Flatliners

Recommended Posts

I consider myself an athiest, although I do believe there is a possibility of a higher power, just like I believe there is a posibility of alien life, but my question is for both athiests, agnostics, and believers alike.

Ever see the movie Flatliners? If you haven't, it's a movie where these medical students purposfully kill themselves, and then bring eachother back to life to find out if there is an afterlife. My question is would you be willing to take that risk to find out if there is something or nothing?

I would of course, I think it would be most enlightening. There is the possibility that you may never come back, but with medical science what it is today, I think the chances are on your side that you would be revived. Maybe they should offer this at churches or something B|
We die only once, but for such a very long time.

I'll believe in ghosts when I catch one in my teeth.

No, there's no guarantee that if there is something that you will encounter it any more than you would say going under for surgery. Also, there's no guarantee that any experience would be attributable to an afterlife as opposed to the physiology of an oxygen starved brain in it's death throws.

Afterlife or no, trying to trick death into giving you a glimpse seems like a bad idea.

It happens to some people quite by accident... it certainly makes a difference in how you live your life from there on out.

Yea, some of the folks who experience nothing during a flatline get pretty depressed about the whole thing.

Might have done, is it the one where they get addicted to death or something?

Anyway - no of course I wouldn't, I have never heard of anything so pointless in my life!

1) I might die

2) I might be permanently brain damaged

3) Anything I might see may be the result of a hallucination/ other natural physiological process

4) If there was a god controlling the afterlife, how fucking dumb do you think he is not to notice that you're about to come round again!?! Do you not think that the afterlife would only kick in when you were actually, properly, irretrievably dead - not just because your heart stops for a minute or two?
Do you want to have an ideagasm?

oxygen deprivation alone can create an astounding number of hallucinations.

Death is by definition that which you do not come back from... 'near death' experiences, even to the silly movie extreme from Flatliners would not/do not qualify as evidence of 'life after death'

furthermore the mind in such circumstances is highly likely to create/fit any sensations it does record in its "impaired stated" into its pre-existing belief system as it does with any "extra ordinary experience". The 'conclusions' an individual comes to after experiencing such an event are extremely subjective, and as such are not a solid 'scientific' foundation any more than experiments with a multitude of mind altering substances/experiences...

Flatliners was a pretty good movie.

But don't try that at home. If you kill yourself, you'll probably die.... Medical technology ain't THAT good.

No, it's the one where they deliberately flatline each other as an experiment then their life's transgressions manifest themselves in life as a kind of haunting. They must atone for their sins to stop the terror, unfortunately for the main character, the person he must atone to is already dead.

You can predict what happens next so I'll leave you to write the ending.
