Is this an act of war?

Recommended Posts

Against another sovereign nation? What would the U.S. do if someone invaded our airspace? And a question for some of you military folks. I know we spy from WAY up. Is there a vertical altitude considered sovereign airspace? http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2007-01/17/content_5615540.htm

Flyovers are not an act of war. They probably prevent more wars than they could ever start.

Getting shot down? That's the price of doing business and it goes both ways.

For the U.S., anything flying above it will attract attention. The FAA is concerned with anything below 60,000 feet for the purposes of air traffic control and the U.S. Military anything above from the surface to as far as they can sense. Actually, the U.S. military is also going to be concerned with certain objects not even over U.S. airspace, for instance, anything getting on course with the Clark Belt.

By U.N treaty, nobody "owns" anything in space. So, even though we landed first on the Moon, we couldn't/didn't "claim" it like people did in the land rushes during our country's creation.

I just did a little research and it seems it is an act of war if intentional. There are some international treaties designating out space as neutral but no consensus on where outer space starts. I found some other interesting stuff while digging but it's mostly anti American so I'm not even gonna go there

No.

Would the US go to war if a spy plane flew into our airspace? Probably not, but I bet we'd shoot it down too.
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

Donno. You tell me. From the U.S >Sec.4 (a) 2 http://www.cs.indiana.edu/statecraft/warpow.html But then again we don't declare war anymore. We just do what the fuck we want[:/] Edit to add: We know damn well those drones are armed w/ Hellfire missiles

The US denies that any UAVs have been shot down.

January 1 6, 2007: The government claimed it shot down an American UAV, but offered no evidence. The U.S. says it has not lost any UAVs lately. It's no secret that American UAVs regularly monitor the Iranian side of the Iran-Iraq border.

Like the U.S. is going to admit it? Gimme a break. If Iranians are on the Iraqi side of the border, different story. How bout this little story>http://www.vialls.com/wecontrolamerica/calcm.html Interesting tale. The missile part. I strongly support the troops. Don't get me wrong. I believe the USSR was the first to plant its flag on the Moon (1966).

Well at least they have come to the point where its just a drone that goes down.....

Its far better than having a pilot or crew that we never hear from again..... that happened far too often during the cold war....

depending on timing and location, downed UAV's are treated with the same seriousness as a downed pilot, if only so the sensor package isnt captured..

ofc you can use explosives to prevent that as well, something a Live pilot wouldnt appreciate very much

Hey, I was just goin' off the web page ya gave me!

Sure as heck looked like a soccer ball on that one!

In either case, that's not how anyone has ever laid claim to a chunk of rock before, at least not in the stereotypical guy steps off a boat, shoves a flag into the ground and says something to the effect of "I claim this land in the name of the Spanish Crown."

Wrong :)
10 points to anybody who can figure out why he is wrong....

Chewbacca is from Endor, therefore, we might own our satellites and space probes?

We don't own our Voyager Space Craft?

2nd guess - Is it some kind of space faring black hole that sucks up private property and deposits it back at the Earth's core via a delicately balanced warping of space/time where the slightest upset of the natural balance of the hole which requires minute amounts of the ozone will reverse the black hole and spray us all into deep space.

Do I get the 10 points if I cop to my imprecise use of wording?

Yes, yes, man-made satellites and spacecraft are owned and whatnot, but as to the Moon and other celestial bodies, nobody (from this planet) owns them.

No, and I wasn't refering to man-made satellites and spacecraft either...

The UN resolution states that no "country" can claim ownership, it says absolutely nothing about "private" ownership.

So how do you stake a claim for a chunk of space?
Do you want to have an ideagasm?
