QuoteOur media is renowned for inaccurately making ridiculous allegations to stir the public up and get reactions and I believe people outside the country don't realise this and believe what they read. I call these people gullible.
Wouldn't the same thing apply then about what your media says about America? Are British citizens "gullible" for believing what British media says about America?
QuoteIts our country. Fuck off. World police you may like to be but you have no place commenting on cultures you don't understand
I sense a double standard....
England is at the forefront of many social changes, being the first major western country to implement many new policies. That can be either good or bad. But either way, it makes England fair game for study and debate by others to see how those policies are working out, so that the rest of the world can decide whether to follow suit, or run the other way.
QuoteWhy shouldn't they be? They created the greastest empire ever. Invented the greatest inventions ever. Provided the greatest innovations ever. Where does your American language originate from? Native Americans???
And the vast, vast majority of us have no urge to arm ourselves.
Because we're hard as fuck.
Look at your history books.
Did you mean to prove my point (which was made in jest btw ) or are you just slippin?

QuoteThe gun arguments are particular unfounded bullshit because no-one had them before the ban. They purely don't figure in our culture and never really have.
There were 1.5 million guns confiscated in 1997. The vote to ban the guns was 384-181 in favor, so fully one-third opposed it.
So obviously when you speak in such absolute terms that "no one had them", and that no one cared, then you are just flat wrong.
And the fact that you speak that way, flying in the face of public facts, ruins your credibility.

QuoteAnd the vast, vast majority of us have no urge to arm ourselves.
4% of Brits owned guns prior to their confiscation in 1997. Do you believe that a majority has the right to deprive a minority of their property and sport, any time they feel like it, even when the minority is law-abiding and isn't bothering anybody?
That sounds like tyranny to me.
And another goofy thing about it was that you responded to one bad shooting, by punishing everyone else who didn't do it. That's nonsensical.
I'll bet the percentage of skydivers in England is even smaller than was the number of gun owners. Would you be okay if the vast, vast majority decided that your sport skydiving should be ruled illegal, for your own safety, and your parachute gear confiscated?
As for me, I prefer to have the freedom to choose to do "risky" things in which the vast majority isn't interested.
Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action.

If 2 per cent of people cared, that is not really significant in our culture.
As for "ruining my credibility" - maybe you should actually come here and speak to a load of people and see how few actually give a shit. I'd buy you a beer just for the hell of it!!
For the record, no i don't like the nanny state and ban everything culture we seem to have going on here which is why i am voting with my feet. But the gun argument for the reasons above is really a non starter and the only person here who seems to worrry about it is someone who doesn't even live here!

Considering where a significant chunk of our culture comes from, I think this comment is particularly funny...
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

I'd love to highlight your statement in neon lights and bash a few heads off it repeatedly.
So, we'll never see you posting in a gun thread about the US again, right?
I love you, Shannon and Jim.

Edison, Einstein, Bell, Whitney, Fulton... next point?

It's a corrected version of what we carried over on the boats... unless you can tell me where the "R's" are in 'sandwich' and the first syllable of 'afternoon'...

Haha - all said in jest mate. It's actually something I like to wind up my wife with - seeing as she is foreign. I think recently she commented on how the Brit's are so conceited and as an example said;
"Why can't they drive on the right said of the road like everyone else!?"
"Why should we!!? We invented the roads!!"
'for it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "chuck 'im out, the brute!" But it's "saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot.'
I think your statistic of 4% also included shotguns, which people can still own.
Not many people owned handguns even before the ban, because unless you were an enthuisiast there was really no need.................

i.e. The Scottish family Robertson becomes 'The Scatch femilee Rabertsan.'

QuoteHey, chill out mate - stop being so sensitive. Still, now your mentioning pronounciation (how can we be wrong? It's our language remember? English?) can you explain to me why for example some Americans replace o's with a's?
i.e. The Scottish family Robertson becomes 'The Scatch femilee Rabertsan.'
Instead of "The Sc"oh"tish F'ah'mily R'oh'bertson"?? It's not OUR problem y'all have vowel problems!!
I love you, Shannon and Jim.
