Do you feel the same about measles, diphtheria and polio vaccinations too, or is your venom just reserved for vaccination that protects sexually active women?

There are around NINE TIMES as many cervical cancer deaths each year in the US as there were measles deaths per year prior to the introduction of measles vaccination.

It's a problem, but the fact that it's a problem doesn't mean that mandating this vaccine is a good response.

Measles killed an average of 423/year just before the vaccine was introduced according to the US CDC www.cdc.gov/mmwR/preview/mmwrhtml/00056803.htm
Cervical cancer incidence & mortality rates*
by race and ethnicity for the U.S., 1997-2001
Race/ethnicity Incidence* Mortality*
White 8.9 2.6
African American 11.8 5.6
Asian/Pacific Islander 9.5 2.8
American Indian/Alaskan Native 6.0 2.8
Hispanic/Latino† 16.2 3.6
* Per 100,000 women and age-adjusted to the 2000 U.S. standard population
† Hispanic/Latino data are not mutually exclusive from Whites, African Americans, Asian/Pacific Islanders, or American Indian/Alaskan Natives
Source: ACS, 2005; based on data from NCI SEER
So the biggest mortality among black women - must explain something!

Honest question -- what would be a good response, given that we have a significant number of deaths across the country from cervical cancer, and that we now have a vaccine that, with wide application, will very likely make those numbers smaller.QuoteIt's a problem, but the fact that it's a problem doesn't mean that mandating this vaccine is a good response
We've had 30 years or so of cheap pap smears being available and not universally used (for whatever reason). How can we change that to their being used when we haven't succeeded in the past?

Fixed it for you.

The mortality rate for much of the first part of the 20th Centry was FIFTY TIMES HIGHER than that of the four year period you used to represent as "prior to the introduction" of the vaccination.
Nice cherry-picking.

In Texas a course is costed at $360.
In Britain / EU a course is costed at £65 (call it $120).
So apparently this vaccination will be some 3X more expensive in the US.
Can anyone explain? I wondered if Britain /EU with socialised medicine could be quoting the vaccination cost only while the US are quoting the total cost of the vaccination including doctor/nurse time, etc...

Hypothetically speaking, let's say this drug will eliminate cervical cancer (which it won't).
The mortality rate of cervical cancer is 4 in 100,000 or 1 in 25,000.
The cost of the vaccine (based on the OP article) is $360.00.
So: 25,000 x $360.00 = $9,000,000.00
In order to prevent cervical cancer in someone (who can easily take precautions to prevent it for herself), we're going to impose a cost on society of nine million dollars per prevented death.
Any actuaries out there?

That's first-year costs. When the costs go down, the price per prevented death goes down as well. Once those forms of the disease are eradicated (as, say, smallpox was) then the entire population is covered for free. So you have to define what timeframe you are talking about as well. If it takes 10 years at current costs to eradicate the disease, then the costs over the next 100 years are one-tenth of that.

Is "Taking Precautions" actually feasible? It requires total abstinence throughout life!

As I understand it, this vaccine is only effective on someone who hasn't been exposed to the disease - hence the idea of vaccination of folk BEFORE they're likely to become sexually active. A bit like the Rubella vaccinations to protect against fetal damage by a contracting the disease during pregnancy... Surely no-one is suggesting that the Rubella vaccination encourages pregnancy, are they!!?
It seems to me that because this is a vaccination against a sexually-transmitted-disease, some folk are making the (pretty massive) leap to the conclusion that the vaccination will in itself encourage sex.

Or they could have sex with whoever they wish and get annual PAP smears.

Yes, it is shocking, isn't it, that it took until 2005 for the USA to get in line with the rest of the civilized world in recognising that minors are not adults.
Which is why protecting minor girls from their own immature judgment is a good idea despite opposition from the reactionary right.
