I think he's implying that because the UK are the only English speaking country in Europe, they are excessively affected by the negative cultural influence of their violent cousin over the pond. John, you really need to stop the America bashing.

PeterB 0 #7 February 8, 2007 Hey John. From same article: Quote Robert Manchin, the chairman of Gallup Europe, said it involved "perceptions" of safety and security based on people's actual experience of crime. It did not correlate to recorded crime statistics which were collected differently around the EU. Emphasis mine. You're an intelligent man so you'll know that perceptions aren't the same thing as hard statistics or facts. They're influenced greatly by culture. Perception in the UK is that guns are bad. I would not go as far as calling that a comprehensive argument suggesting that Americans should abandon their guns.

Nick 0 #10 February 8, 2007 Also have to remember this was only a survey and not based on official reports of crime stats, sure that if a survey was conducted in the right areas of America we could show that most of them are all gun obsessed idiots... In the last 10 years the FEAR of crime has risen dramtically, quite disproportionate to the actual crime committed. Basically, us in the UK are pussies. We are scared of things that MIGHT happen, but almost certainly will not. This is due, partly, to the removal of village bobbies etc into response style policing. The communication with the law abiding public was lost. Now its back, in the form of Community Support Officers. A trip back to the contact the community had with the wider policing family years ago. We've gone full circle and I for one think its a good thing Any survey you conduct will be negative in the UK at the moment. We are whingers. The public believe gangs of kids (doing nothing illegal, just hanging out) are a menace to society and that they are criminals. Add to that our sensational media reporting and theres no chance you'd ever get a good report off the population.

There are two sets of figures and you have to compare like with like. Both the US and UK do crime surveys, and both do uniform crime reports of crimes actually reported to the police. Surveys always show more apparent crime than the reports. You can compare survey to survey (being careful that they really ask the same thing) or report to report, but you can't mix survey and report and expect to get any sensible conclusion. You also have to be careful that the crimes are defined in the same way in both nations (true generally of homicides, aggravated assaults and robberies, but less true of less serious crimes)....
