PLEASE QUIT WITH THE CELEBRITY NEWS BEFORE WE GIVE YOU SOME REAL NEWS TO REPORT.:|

Celebrities are the news!!! I value their opinions, actions, sayings, and clothing choices. I NEED to know when they have something to say or screw their lives up beyond belief. I mean it's hard with all that money.
I want to make sure I live up to their ethics and choices and I'm so glad that I can do this by watching CNN, Fox, and all the other channels.

No shit... I'm so sick of hearing about A.N.S. and B.S., I'm ready to go on a shooting spree just to hear about something else on the news.

Nice... :D:D

Actually I kind of like it that there isn't any more pressing news then the happenings of the "famous" people of the world.

Agreed. This stuff has been bothering me for many years. When I began doing news at my first radio job they gave me a lot of flexibility in story selection, writing style, attitude, etc. I came up with what I called "News that Touches Your Life," basically focusing on stuff that could have an impact on you personally.

A local traffic wreck may be newsworthy, but if it really affects your life (meaning that someone you know was involved) you shouldn't be first hearing about it on the radio. In contrast, if the Montana legislature is considering a piece of legislation it could happen here, thus the potential impact locally.

Story: August 1998, the anniversary of the Princess Di auto mishap. Most "real" news operations in Atlanta lead with the story, using up much air time rehashing the accident. In a three minute newscast I mentioned several other stories, few of which were reported by the big boys. At the end, I closed with "Diana, the wife of Britain's Prince Charles, is dead and has been for a year. Local news organizations are talking about it." Then time, weather, and out. No emotional hand-wringing. No blather. just the facts.

Of course, this might explain why I can't get many radio interviews...B|

Cheers,
Jon

Ummm but maybe there is, you ever think of that.
Like the asteroid that is due to hit earth in like 20 something years. You wouldn't want to keep that in the headlines long though, I guess it scares people.

Hiding from it though won't make it go away. hmmmm I could be onto something here.

>PLEASE QUIT WITH THE CELEBRITY NEWS . . . .

But . . . but . . . where else will we find out what state of putrification Anna Nicole Smith's body is in, or whether Judge Judy or the Iron Chef will decide on who gets custody of her child? Heck, how will we even find out if she's still dead?

From what I understand, the changes we're seeing in American news media happened several years ago in Europe--News outlets started having to compete for business, so they started leading with sensationalized celebrity news because gossip attracts a wider audience than hard news.

It's my understanding that the problem is two-fold. First, there is considerably more competition among news outlets--cable news, Internet, etc. Second, network news is now expected to turn an advertising profit; whereas, it used to be considered a lost leader.

As I type this, Jon Stewart is making fun of the situation on The Daily Show.

"CNN at one point going ninety minutes without a commercial, making the death of Anna Nicole Smith a more significant news event than a State of the Union address and slightly less than 9/11."

This is a great segment. At one point they just start showing unrelated footage of scantily clad women in another window. I'm cracking up.
I don't have an M.D. or a law degree. I have bachelor's in kicking ass and taking names.
