"Violence and misinformation are threatening the World Health Organization's efforts to eradicate polio. Last month Abdul Ghani Khan, a senior Pakistani doctor, was killed by a remote-controlled bomb shortly after urging villagers to vaccinate their children. In Pakistan, Afghanistan and among Muslim communities in India, some local clerics have denounced vaccination as a pro-western plot to sterilise Muslims. The same rumours stopped vaccination in northern Nigeria in 2003, causing an international surge in polio cases.

In Pakistan, some clerics who command a loyal local following have even declared that preventing epidemics is contrary to Islamic law, and have described people infected with polio as "martyrs". In response, senior Muslims in Pakistan have issued pro-vaccination fatwa decrees. Some mothers are reportedly getting children vaccinated secretly for fear of local reprisals.....

Hmm. Here in the US, one similar belief is that some vaccinations are a plot to make money at the expense of children's health, and will encourage them to engage in dangerous behaviors. While I disagree with both groups, I can see how some Muslims would fear western vaccinations.

those ppl in that part of the world will never,, NEVER , get up to speed on anything,, the biggest problem of why that area of the world is soo fucked up, is the uneducation, call em whatever, clerics, sheiks, religious leaders,,, dumbfucks i prefer to call them, will always have power over the ppl cause they know blind sheep who dont understand, or read/write, uneducated, will listen to them, they can tell them what they think they are suspose to know, and when ppl can't read or write or understand a simple thing, they let other ppl tell them how or why and when to sleep,eat, shit, or kill.. i have no more sympathy for any of them NO more, they have had 5000+ fucking years to figure it out,, simple, they are dumb, dumb dumb,,, sorry, but everyone has a opinion and i am just so fed up with that part of the world, i just wish it just didn't exist anymore.,. i have always hoped something will or would work and it never gets any better, after awhile, you just say, screw em..

I just had a thought -- Maybe this is good thing.

Vaccinations, antibiotics, anything that keeps people healthy should be promoted as a tool of Satan.

People living in extreme poverty or in wartorn areas have a tendency to leave for better places.

And lots of them don't bother to enter the new place legally. I mean what's an arrest compared to watching your kids die of disease/malnutrition/blown up?

Disease don't give a crap about artificial lines drawn arbitrarily on a graphical representation of earth. That's all that borders are. Doesn't give a fuck about laws either. Diseases like polio need to be aggresively attacked world wide.

People may be poor and uneducated but my bet is that the average person there is as intelligent as the average person here. The difference is access to quality education. But sure let's just say they deserve it.

I think its a long road to educate them, than the years that anyone posting on this forum has left on the earth or even longer than our children's children time to educate people that trust their religious leaders, don't trust the west and "clerics have denounced vaccination as a pro-western plot to sterilise Muslims.
