DIY 50 Cal Project

Recommended Posts

Barrels, as received and partially machined.

Barrel stock was WWII surplus M2 Browning.

It will be a slowly evolving project.

Sweet...what's the receiver going to look like?

First, its a bolt action design, not semi-auto. The extra barrel may end up in a semi-auto design at some point, or maybe just a long version. We took a hell of a lot of metal off the basic barrel for this short bbl. design. Currently, the receiver is designed as a simple cylindrical tube, but we may make some changes when we get closer to making it.

It is a shared project, and since my partner has a life, progress is sometimes slow. More pics as the thing progresses.

Why go to all this trouble when you can get a parts kit and assemble a semi auto version that's totally legal?

Because its fun to make shit. Because we can. Legal stuff is also a consideration, because even bolt-action designs are NOT legal everywhere, unless they were owned before certain bans went into effect (no more comment needed).

It's great fun to make stuff, AK, FAL, CTME, 1918, MG42 are all subjects for the DIY types. Every one of those can be done from a pile of parts. That's why the anti's will never completely ban firearms as long as there are home machine shops scattered across the country. Molon Labe

Are you required to report to the BATF in order to manufacture a firearm?

No as long as it's not an NFA weapon. Making a machine gun is no longer allowed for non-licensed individuals. Registration and payment of the $200 making tax (even if its an AOW which normally has a $5 transfer tax) is required for all other NFA arms.

I think just some paperwork and a tax payment. It's always about the money.....

Good luck on the project. Don't blow your hand off when you first test it out. ;)

...thinking that a long string tied to the trigger and nearby tree...:):P

I'm really interested to see how this is going to turn out, please keep us updated as it gets goin.

Same here! :)

I will post pics as significant parts get done, but it is not a top priority right now. And, yes, it will be tested very carefully. I have never fired a .50 or even seen one fired. It must make some pretty good noise!
