At least 20 killed at Virginia Tech

Simple fact. People who wish to get a gun to do harm will get one.

...providing there are guns to be got in the first place. What you say is quite true in the US, or Brazil. Maybe Afghanistan or Sudan, too. Probably a good deal less so in the average European country.

Having said that, I'd think that being a homeowner without a gun in post-Katrina New Orleans would be an unenviable position to be in, even today. That's been kind of an eye-opener.

Will you all knock off this "school rivalry" bullshit so that we can continue the discussion of the topic at hand? Thank you.

I can never get my head round the fact a person in America can legally buy a gun before he can legally buy a beer :S

Are they scared of people going on the rampage with a bottle of Coors?

Considering that it takes 17 bottles of Coors to get a buzz on, I'd say no.

I'm stunned. [:/]

I'm waiting to see the anti-gun fucksticks jump on this one, whoring the deaths of the innocent to advance their ineffective policies...

Congratulations, you were just the first to whore the deaths of the innocent to advance your own political preference. I'm sure you're very proud of yourself.
Do you want to have an ideagasm?

I think it's all about the "nutter" element of society

Only complete fruit cake, barking at the moon type people go on killing rampages.... every country has these nutters, but why does it seem that America has more than its fair share of them? what is happening in American society to produce more than its fair share of these nut cases ?

Actually the Brady people are already on national television blaming guns for this. The brady guy on the news mentioned the legality of assault rifles and high capacity magazines, neither of which was believed to be involved.

The news here mentioned that the shooter used a 9mm and .22 handgun, and was possibly 19 or 20 years old.

Well, I'd say the larger population has something to do with it. More people, more nuts.

It's yet to be shown that america DOES have more than its share. What we can all agree on is that america's press gets more airtime. There's a serious sampling error here.

However, it's my personal view (with no data other than my life's experience) that america DOES probably have more and worse crazies than Canada at least.

How would this come about if it's true? I have theories...

One thing that really needs to be pointed out is that not all problems have solutions. This is a tragedy, but a huge argument is being fueled on the assumption that we can prevent this kind of thing from ever happening again.

I think it's also worth pointing out that stupidity is far more deadly than malice. Tens of thousands of people die every year because someone can't control his car properly. But the idea of being intentionally gunned down is somehow more offensive to us than the idea of being accidentally run over. And we somehow place a much greater value on the necessity of personal transportation over the right to bear arms.

No, I do not mean to downplay the tragedy of this event.

Negative. That honor goes to an anti-gun person, Andy9o8, in message #12:
"It's scary to think that he might have single-handedly killed so many more if he'd been armed with a knife instead."

It's the best excuse they've got to ban guns, and they'll ride that pony as long as it has legs. It doesn't matter that it won't work, or that all examples of gun control have proven ineffective. Most people don't know that. So they will try and fool the public masses once again, in order to achieve their personal political goals. And the media will go right along with the disinformation campaign. Honest gun owners are once again about to become the scapegoats for murderous nuts. Their theory is that taking my guns away from me here in Texas, is somehow supposed to prevent a murderous, suicidal nut in Virginia from getting a gun...

rifle, yes. But you need to be 21 to get a handgun. If the shooter was 19 or 20, as someone indicated might be the case, the weapons were not legally obtained.

It also appears to prove the obvious - that restricting magazines to 10 rounds does nothing to prevent large scale shootings. Something anyone who ever did target shooting would know. Low capacity mags are just a nuisance.

Does America have more serial killers or plain crazy suicidal killers? (well, not compared to the world of Islam) I wouldn't be surprised, and I'd start by looking at the overprescription of ADD and anti depressant drugs to teens.

If the shooter is under 21, the ammunition (well, the 9mm anyway) would not have been legally obtained either.

John, you clearly have ignored all my posts on the gun issue in many, many gun threads, even including this thread. I grant a lot of acknowledgement of both sides of the issue. You clearly do not know my mind as you presume you do. Many people cannot be neatly pigeon-holed into either a "pro" or an "anti" camp, and I'm one of them. FWIW, I also think that most of the time, I tend to play the ball, and not the player.

Getting rid of guns would be a huge step in the right direction.

It certainly will not stop/prevent all future mass homicide attempts (which I never indicated but all of you pro-gun-pro-easy-murder-folks assumed that I did) but it will definitely make it more difficult to stage this type of event.

Of course you can kill people in other ways.. but I do not see that there is ever the need to have a handgun that is reloaded quickly. (As the type that was used today was.)

For all you folks who say you need your handgun/semi-automatic weapons to protect yourself.. give me a fucking break. I don't feel safe with you clowns having guns!!!!!!!!!!!! I want your guns gone in order to protect myself! Why should you have the right to own a weapon of the nature that was used today?

I think you have no right whatsoever.
