Which side of the fence

Recommended Posts

I don't know if there's a side to actually choose. I wonder how the kids didn't think about how dangerous crocodiles are. :S

So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

"The children shot the animals with catapults and beat them with wooden sticks," the agency said. "One of the irritated crocodiles bit Liu's clothes and dragged him into water, where he was eaten by a swarm of crocodiles."
Seems like a Good candidate for the Darwin awards.

Dumb asses that do not respect their fellow creatures on this planet deserve whatever they get when the animals just do what they do.

I frequently go into wilderness environments where humans are not neccesarily the top of the food chain... you have to prepare for that.. and act accordingly.

I agree.

But the act of caging animals shows a dominance and disrespect to animals. In a way, we've taught children that we are dominant, that animals do not deserve respect and that there is little to "really" fear (See how close we can get and not get hurt?). Animal shows and zoos show us that we can get within striking distance of a crocodile or tiger with nothing to fear. That's a pretty mixed message to a kid, wouldn't you say?

I'd suggest most fucked up part is the culture that says that animals are here for our whims.

i agree,i think the only time animals should be kept in cages/zoos is when they are near extinction and they are there for breeding...once their levels are back up, release then in to the wild

zoos are very outdated, we don't need them in this day and age

Unfortunately for most endangered species, the biggest threat is habitat destruction, inevitably caused by humans. There are many species right now that only exist in zoos and breeding programs because they have nowhere left to live in the wild, and that number is increasing rapidly.

I don't think that zoos are the way to go, but there really is no right answer here because humans are not going to stop our activities anytime soon, and probably not going to leave large areas of land untouched to ensure that all the species have an equal right to life. Even national parks are being shown to be too small in most cases to ensure the genetic diversity that species need, and the parks are too separated to allow interbreeding. But national parks are not even an option in a lot of diversity hot-spots in the third world...

It's a tough call whether a life in a zoo is better than extinction for these species, but reality is that many of them would not be alive if it weren't for human intervention, zoos and breeding programs (and wouldn't be facing extinction if it weren't for humans in the first place).

The owner of a private game reserve here in SA was last week eaten by several lions. It appears that he got out of his car to take photographs of the lions.

Many people are now calling for the lions to be put down. It would be a great pity if that happened. Animals are called animals for a reason.

Unfortunately, the "wild" is now often our neighborhoods.

My thoughts too.... I wonder about his parents and the lessons he learned in his nine short years about tormenting beasts. I'm sure his mon and dad must be horrified and in great pain.... but I still wonder how he got there and where was the supervision of this child.

How are they outdated? What makes them less relevant than in previous generations?

because i like to think that as different forms of media progress, the need to keep animals caged up to see them doesn't apply anymore

keep animals in zoos for research, or for breeding...but not purely for the viewing pleasure of humans

Because two dimensional pixelated images is the same as experiencing things in person?

I learned at a VERY early age not to mess with the gators.....ESPECIALLLY Mother gator near her nice big stack of leaves. We learned that going swimming in the lakes around there was NOT a smart idea.... those were perfect habitat for the big reptiles.. although there was one spring that was crystal clear where we did go swimming. The gators did avoid that because it was cold and clear....but there were snakes everywhere....

Even with all of that early training about nature around us... I did get to see my mother run REALLLLY fast one time in the Smokey Mountains National Park when she was trying to get some pictures of a very cute little black bear cub....its not nice to get between a mother and her cubs..

I have seen morons in the Banff and Jasper National Parks parked along the roads and out of their cars by the hundreds... walking far out into a meadow to get great closeup pictures of a HUGE bull moose.. OR the idiots following the very photogenic grizzly bear about 40 ft away. FAR too many people bring up their children with a skewed view of the natrual world of cute little Bambi's... and teddy bears. If you do not have proper respect for WILD ANIMALS.... you may find yourself getting a rather RUDE lesson from one.... who is just doing what he does.
