ExAFO 0 #1 April 25, 2007 I've been chatting with a friend of my sister for awhile over myspace and the phone. We've hung out a few times, and there's an attraction there... She calls me this afternoon, I ask her what she's up to--she blurts out that she's on her way to her dealer to buy two ounces of pot. Shit--as a first year law student I know that an ounce under IL law if she's caught, it can get her up to 3 years in the pen and $25k in fines, not to mention her car confiscated. She buys in quantity, as both her roommates smoke, so they pool their $. That's possession w/intent to distribute the moment she hands it to them. She's a terrible driver and has beaucoup tickets...But she drives to her dealer... I only said "be careful." She gets all defensive like I'm lecturing her or something. I may think pot laws are a bad idea, but until the laws change, they're still the law. (although I have no desire to personally support the legalization effort) Am I off base in cautioning her to be careful, and not call me on her cell (a ticketable offense in Chicago, IIRC) until she gets home? I call it concern, she acts as if it was nagging... Opinions (related to this query, wiseasses ) ??Illinois needs a CCW Law. NOW.
quade 4 #2 April 25, 2007 I would think it's probably not the first time she's done this. While on a certain level she may not fully understand the legal ramifications of what she's doing, my "guess" is that she does understand the procedure for doing it. I would think it would be a bit like a whuffo telling a skydiver to be "careful". It -always- cracks me up when a whuffo does that to me, but I can understand a slightly paranoid and defensive person taking it the wrong way.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
willard 0 #3 April 25, 2007 If I were a law student i think I'd be more concerned about what would happen if she got busted while riding in your car. That could really mess up any career in the legal professions. If she is willing to do time for her pleasures, that's her choice. But don't let her mess up your future. Other than that you have made sure she knows the consequences so anything more you say about it to her will only piss her off. Not out of line to give her info, but would be to continually bring up the subject.

bexren76 0 #13 April 25, 2007 Speaking as another lawyer (albeit an English one) I would say that even just as a friend I consider it part of my job to let my friends know what I think. I expect them to let me know what they think especially if I am going about with my head up my arse. But I also think that once you have said it you have to not harp on and let them do their thing without commenting. If it goes tits up then it's your job as a friend to be there to pick up the pieces (within reason of course). Anyway if I were you I'd get used to clients taking f*** all notice of your advice even if that results in them being banged up!! You know what they say about good advice being useless.......! Opie 0 #14 April 25, 2007 "and there's an attraction there..." So you're attracted to this girl, she's a regular smoker, I assume you're not and not for legalization. In the long run you might have more problems in any serious relationship with her than "telling her to be careful" Having the same outlook on life and laws helps in the long run. livendive 8 #18 April 25, 2007 QuoteSo what laws would you report to the police... Are there good laws and bad laws? Absolutely. I would not report a friend for smoking pot (or doing any other drug). I would report a friend for getting their 8 year old high. Edit to add: As for the original post...it seems perfectly reasonable to caution a friend and in no way out of line. Zipp0 1 #19 April 25, 2007 Shit dude - as a law student you should know that the law is pretty much a joke, and a good lawyer can be its master. You can do pretty much anything you want, including murder - drugs are nothing. A good lawyer and some money in the right pockets will get you off nearly every time. She'll likely outgrow the pot thing, like pretty much everyone..... I'd be more worried about her attitude. -------------------------- Chuck Norris doesn't do push-ups, he pushes the Earth down. ExAFO, I take it that you have no plans to become a defense attorney. Oh, you should also check her arms for needle marks as the government says that a joint leads to heroin and we all know that the government is always rightWillie Nelson pleads out on pot charge Tuesday, April 24, 2007 – Willie Nelson and his tour manager avoided jail Tuesday after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor count of marijuana possession after an incident last September in Louisiana. Nelson and his tour manager, David Anderson, plus Nelson's sister, Bobbie Nelson, and two drivers, received citations on Sept. 18, 2006 after state troopers said they found marijuana and hallucinogenic mushrooms on Nelson's tour bus during a commercial-vehicle inspection on Interstate 10. Officers at the scene smelled something suspicious. A search of the bus found 1 1/2 pounds of marijuana and about two-tenths of a pound of psychedelic mushrooms. Nelson and Anderson were each fined $1,024 and were placed on probation for six months. The citation against Bobbie Nelson, a member of his band, was dismissed. A conviction could have resulted in a six-month jail term."...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black."
