JohnRich 4 #101 May 3, 2007 QuoteA stick, a knife, your hands and feet - all effective weapons as well. I've been mugged exactly once, and he had his arm around my neck and his hand in my pocket before I knew what was going on. I threw him out of instinct, because that what I'd do to Jay when we were sparring - and I was honestly shocked when it worked and I saw a big guy lying on his back in front of me. He got up and ran away. I lost about $20. Had he gotten my gun instead of my money, I might not be here today. So it worked for me. Well heck, that's proof positive that nobody needs no steenkin' gun. All we've got to do is make judo a mandatory class in high school, and our future generations will be good to go! Ok - how effective of a procedure is that for the 80 year old granny you mentioned in your other post? We're back to a point that I made a week or so ago. If you want me to do something, you have two ways to get me to comply with your wishes; reason and force. If I have an effective method to defend myself from force (whatever that method may be), then the only way you have to gain my compliance is by reason. I'd rather have that effective option than be (by and large) at the mercy of whatever force my attacker decides to use to gain my compliance. *edited to correct grammar*Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim. I did say that, unlike what many gun advocates believe, there are more options than "carry a gun" or "be a victim." >All we've got to do is make judo a mandatory class in high school, >and our future generations will be good to go! Would work a lot better than making guns mandatory!

Do you really believe those are the only two options? No. Most of the time all I have handy is a knife. A club is not an option most of the time. I am not practiced in martial arts and have neither the time nor the desire to learn.

Would work a lot better than making guns mandatory! That brings to mind something a high school teacher of mine once said. He was a Marine in the South pacific in WWII and would always point out errors in war movies. One of his least favorites were scenes showing a soldier throwing away his gun to fight with a knife. As he would say, "It's stupid to give away an advantage. If you have a gun and he has a knife, SHOOT THE SUMBITCH!"
craddock 0 #108 May 4, 2007 Quote I did say that, unlike what many gun advocates believe, there are more options than "carry a gun" or "be a victim." Who is saying that? I am licensed to carry in almost 30 states. Other than travling with a gun in my car on occasion, I have yet to carry a firearm. I don't dress right for it to be appropriate. I often have my Bladetech Pro Hunter with me but that is more for utility than for defense. That spot isn't bad at all, the winds were strong and that was the issue! It was just on the downwind side. crotalus01 0 #109 May 4, 2007 If you are against gun ownership, fine. Don't buy one, and don't use one. But the Constitution of the United Sates of America GUARANTEES my RIGHT to own not just one but multiple guns if I so desire (with exceptions for mental illness etc). I have multiple guns, I live in the USA. Deal with it. I am not a criminal, but woe to the stupid fuck that tries to break into MY home because thats a dead motherfucker if I have ANY chance to draw my weapon(s). If I lived in Socialist Europe, I guess I would just have to play the role of victim... As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD...

Lindsey 0 #112 May 4, 2007 Ya' know what? I don't think it's all that important whether anybody carries a gun. I don't ever expect to carry one myself, and I don't expect to need to. Ya' never know what's gonna happen in the course of a day though. I don't consider self defense to be central to the argument for the right to carry a gun. The *need* to carry a gun is a completely different issue than the *right* to own a gun or more. I don't think most of us need to own a gun, but I want to have my right to own one preserved. linz-- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. It would be the freakin' "Wild, Wild East", everybody fighting all the time, throwing each other into tissue walls, talking out of sync with their mouths, putting out challenges, slapping the floor and posing in martial stances. It's nuts, you Americans, all you want to do is flip each other. EVOLVE ...
