It sounds to me that these people just aren't very bright? Or were they mentally ill? there aren't enough details here about the couple to make a "judgement." many public defenders are lax to get mental health evaluations on their clients. I often see many prisoners with severe illness that do not belong in prison, but in a forensic hospital. My heart was torn today when I one of my patients told me how afraid he is of his former "cellie." The patient is not only schizophrenic but mentally retarded. He is imprisoned for arson. He is much better served in a hospital.
As far as this couple, we won't know about the state of mind either of them were in. Keep in Mind, Andrea Yates was grossly psychotic when she killed her children. this couple could have been tremendously impaired. and still be vegan.

Most of the vegans that I've met are fairly smart and sensible people.

?? Again, most I've met have been pretty agnostic. One was quite religious, and believed christians had a duty to be vegans (to reduce suffering of animals.)

If it's a choice between that and being a bacon-and-cheese-eating 300 pound tenth grader, I'd think most people would want to be scrawny! Best of all, of course, is to teach your kids to eat healthy whether they are vegetarians, vegans, or meat eaters.

not only am I vegan, but I'm a raw vegan. meaning, I don't cook my food. So, smoking pot is definately out. Don't like the stuff anyway, and it smells terrible. All of my raw vegan friends and vegetarian friends are not pot heads. They are just ordinary people who happen to not eat meat.
If God didn't want us to eat animals He wouldn't have made em out of meat.....& soooooo damn tastee!!!

As for the vegan lifestyle, I've observed it long enough to realize that there are a lot of problems with getting all of your nutrition in proper doses by eating only vegetables. Most vegans seem to be on the puny side.
They also, as a group, have a cliquish, highmindedness. The lifestyle has all of the marks of a religion, which I know you despise.
I saw an episode of Wife Swap when a Cajun woman, whose life consisted of living on things from the swamp, went to Cal.
She was invited to a vegan party of friends of the other wife.
The Cajun offered some small gator skulls as gifts[pretty cool, if you ask me]. The gifts were rejected. They wouldn't even touch them. Then she was rejected, as if she was of some lower caste.
These two young people were probably in the lifestyle because it was the thing to do.
In a time when high school seniors can't read at a sixth grade level, and can't add a single column of numbers on a piece of paper, do we really expect them to put serious effort into knowing the problems of vegetarianism.

The vegan diet is hardly any issue or excuse - particularly since a 6 week everything should be breastmilk or, if you cannot, there are vegan infant formula available. There is plenty of information out there or there etc.
In any case, if your baby is in a shape where you can count the bones (what ever the causes) and you don't do anything about it you are criminally negligent at the very least.

Royd you cant get to real conclusions by your limited observations. Maybe you should search the scientific literature and see what real data there is. I did that, you can read one such study here:

1)Veggies have lower wieght, choletsrol and blood pressure
2)Veggies have lower mortality rates , especially lower incidence of heart disease and cancer
3)"substantial public health and enviromental benefits would likely result from a widespread adoption of vegetarianism"
Of course there are some very stupid vegans and veggie(the two are different); but there are also some very stupid meat eaters. The question is not that, its, are there serious disadvantages to being a veggie? and I woul say the answer to that is no. Most nutrtionist advise a balanced diet, eating in moderation and regular excericse. This is easily acheivable on a veggie diet. If you want to argue by anecdote i will give you an opposite one, Bill Pearl was a veggie and won Mr Universe. Of course my anecodte and your anecodte are really not meaningful, what is meaningful is peer reviewed research; show some of that supporting your prejudice against veggies and youll have a point, without it, you dont.

No it fucking doesn't. It shows that vegans are human. Humans do dumb and tragic things. I guess you're saying no omnivore has ever starved a child ??!!
