Hmm. After the illegals are legalized, they are not a cheap labor anymore. At least they now must be paid minimal wage and overtime, so I'd say this is not a concern anyway.

It's easy to get mad.

It's harder to think through the issues, see all the complicated effects, acknowledge both the pros and cons and consider them as a whole, then come to a thoughtful conclusion.

What's secret? The bill to be debated will be publicly available for viewing.

>So much for my raise next year.

I think people should get raises because they do work that's worthy of a raise - not by eliminating other people's jobs.

I'd have to see the bill to comment on it. If it intends to allow people who want to work in the US to do so legally, I'd be all for it. If it intends to allow illegal immigrants to "jump ahead" of people applying for legal work visas I'd be against it.

American's are not eliminating other people's jobs it's the other way around.

Illegals have already jumped ahead of the queue. Are you saying if they're allowed to stay and work you're gonna oppose this bill?

I doubt that, it'll take you about 5 seconds to contort such that you think the Z Visa is a great idea.

Without a contract that says so, no job is "had" to anyone else's exclusion.

It is entirely moot in the discussion of immigration, of course, as you're falling victim to the myth of finite workforce. Immigrants create jobs as well as fill them.

Tell me again what you do for a living?

I am a union pipefitter 30 yrs. Currently building powerhouses in the USA so all you people can have JUICE. I did my time in the service and I helped construct everthing from navel vessels to hospitals in my yrs. Why? And I'm sure you still use elec. from the single and dual cycle natural gas powerhouses, and nuke plants we work on. I won't do coal anymore. I have't gotten a raise in two yrs. That's because the union uppers thieving our pension fund and the union going down the tubes cause of all the cheap labor (rats). Politicians and labor leaders. All in the same bed. Dirty bastards. Want me to rant some more?[:/]Edit to add: I started building Spruance class destroyers in the late 70's at Ingalls Shipyards.. Many were slated to be sold to IRAQ. How's that for a turn of events. Do you really trust the US Govt? Carry on

And you're telling me that unskilled, undocumented laborers are delivering competitive services for less money? You obviously know this for a fact, so, my question to you is why aren't -you- reporting the companies that hire them to the INS?

I haven't seen the bill yet. If it allows illegal immigrants the same rights as legal immigrants I'd be against it.

I agree with you. The illegals, talk about how 'tough' they've had it... what about those folks who went through 'proper channels' and sweated for years to legally become citizens? Then, the illegals just want 'amnesty'? Not fair! Any Bill, that allows 20-million illegals to stay in this country... I'm against it. We'll just have to wait and see what the Bill looks like.

It grants them a Z Visa if they were here before Jan 1st 2007, which allows them to stay and work legally. Probationary, pending background checks, then 4 years renewable from which point they can apply for a Green Card.

Some of this would kick in only after DHS certifies that the border security provisions but the wording is sneaky, the Z visas pretty much start immediately.

Other existing legal work Visas are very similar, e.g. H1 and L1 visas.

So . . . you're not actually affected by this right now and you're being pissed off prophylactically?

I keep my eyes open while driving, you might call that looking prophylactically.

In fact I would.

However being pissed off at a driver that hasn't yet cut you off is simply a waste of energy.

American's aren’t eliminating other people's jobs but the US government sure do a good job of eliminating basic levels of living for Mexicans through trade agreements.

Well they're Mexicans, the various trade agreements do more to help Mexico than harm it, and they're the Mexican government's responsibility not the USA's.

Saying we should only be concerned when we wake up and have to deal with the consequences of bad legislation is a very weak position to take. But go for it, it does leave me wondering why you bother to post in this thread, are you prophylactically posting?

This legislation is pending and one chamber has passed this bill so it's onto the next, akarunway is absolutely right to react to this, pretty soon it'll be too late to do anything, and regardless of the final outcome he absolutely has cause to be pissed at those who proposed, negotiated and voted for this.

The labor's only cheap for so long....once they're settled in, they want what everyone else gets. Who wouldn't? But I'm concerned about where that leaves us socially and fiscally. The folks who worked hard to get here and worked hard while they were here to make a better life for themselves and their families have children who often don't have their same work ethic. The rising crime rates because of these now adult children annoys the hell out of me. We get to foot that bill AND deal with the social problems that they bring. Cheap labor now has big costs later, imho. It's not worth the short-term savings.

Not to mention those who cross and almost immediately, join gangs and increase our prison population to the bursting point. After the 6-illegals in New Jersey (?) who had a terrorist 'plot' and were captured, you'd think, we would realize, just 'anybody' can cross our borders. All those folks sneaking across our borders are breaking laws and all we want to do is pat 'em on the head and take care of them and give them jobs... that noone else wants.:S Our government needs to get some backbone and stand-up to the problem.

You'd think we'd realize that immigrants commit less crime on average than native-born Americans, and that terrorism has nothing to do with immigration reform.

It's so far over the top that it's hard to fathom--immigrants make better citizens than the native-born. And yet we persist with deliberate self delusions based on pride and ignorance.
