Prison businesses affecting private businesses

Recommended Posts

Anyone who has seen the Shawshank Redemption can recall that the warden was accepting bribes from private business owners to refrain from bidding on projects because prison labor was so cheap.

It's a real life issue. http://www.fresnobee.com/170/story/49369.html

""I am going to lose 40% of my gross sales," said Chris Adolph, owner of Adolph Foods Inc. in Fresno, a food distributor. "We provide jobs and tax revenue to the state. Whose best interest is being served here?"

I think it sucks that these guys about about to lose a large amount of their business. I also think it sucks that they get 40% of their business from the government.

I also think it sucks that the government is in the business of being in business. Sure, it helps prisons pay for themselves but it also is socialism.

It's weird to have an issue that I don't know where I stand because both sides of the argument violate my libertarian leanings.

Mixed feelings here, too.

But here's an "I just woke up, I'm still in bed, so don't expect a perfect idea" option:

I'd prefer to see nonviolent drug offenders released from prison, which would dramatically lower the amount of people locked up. Government can legalize all drugs for use in the home by persons over 18, and tax the products like they do with alcohol or tobacco. Then use the revenue from this to buy food to feed the inmates who have a REASON for being in prison. Elimination of the DEA (not to mention other worthless parts of the government, namely "most of it") would allow an income tax cut, too.

Of course Adolph Foods et al will lose a bit of business because of the lower prison population, but I think they'd survive that.

This is hardly new "news". just Google Wackenhut or Unicor.
