Also eight shots from a .50cal revolver would easily kill a polar bear, and that pig is not even close to being that size and toughness.

Someone can shoot you 8 times in the lower leg with a .50 round and I bet you won't die ;)

Good grief, if someone shot your leg eight times with a .50-cal, you might not have a leg left!!! The femural-arterial-bleed will let you live for 4, maybe 5 minutes...:S

Actually the femoral doesn't go to the lower leg, which is why I chose that. I was exaggerating, but I'm just trying to make the point that 8 shots to certain parts of the body would be survivable under the right circumstances.

In other words, the .50 didn't mean nuthin' if he couldn't hit chit to begin with. ;)

point is it shouldnt take 8 shots to kill anything, ones best two acceptable once in awhile. 3 and you need to go back and practice till you can be sure you can do it in one.

My first real firearm was a 20 ga. H&R single shot. Since the bag limit for squirrels and rabbits was 4/day my dad would give me 4 cartridges to hunt with each day. It didn't take long to learn to make the most of each and every shot.

Dude it's a kid and he shot one big ass pig. If i was his dad i would be proud as well i don;t care if he used 50 shots.

Good job for a kid.

My thoughts differ on that. If it were my kid I would rather he pass up a poor shot and walk away with an empty tag. The first responsibility of every hunter is safety...no exceptions. The second responsibility is a clean kill...again, no exceptions. Granted there are bound to be times when a shot gets deflected, etc. and results in a wounded animal that needs to be tracked but 8 shots from a gun capable of dropping a moose??

How much of a kick does a .50 caliber handgun have? I have a hard time understanding how an 11 year old kid can handle one safely. :S

An 11-year-old Alabama boy used a pistol to kill a wild hog his father says weighed a staggering 1,051 pounds and measured 9-feet-4 from the tip of its snout to the base of its tail...

So his father says...

I'm calling BS on this one. All the photo's sure look doctored to me and you really think these people shot a world record hog and never got it verified. BS, BS, BS, BS....

As much as I'd like to believe this is true, its always funny how someone shoots an animal this size and either buries it before anyone witnesses it or in this case "makes it into sausage." Right.

"Yup it was 9 feet long and 1051 lbs, but we made it into sausage before anybody could verify any of this."

I sure hope there is more to this story that will prove me wrong because that is one hell of a pig if it really weighed half ton and I'd like to believe it's true.

Well, there's a perspective issue, because the boy is standing behind the hog, making him look smaller in comparison. But that doesn't mean that the hog isn't really as big as claimed - just that the difference between the boy and the hog isn't as dramatic as it seems.

And how else would you pose the shot? I wouldn't want my boy climbing up on top of that monster pig, in fear that the pig might have a few lurches left in him, which could hurt your son.

I don't know if, you've ever hunted feral hogs or not but, getting that good, clean, lethal shot is not that easy. A couple years ago, the rancher I work for and I, went 'pig' hunting. We were up in the rocks, when I spotted a huge sow and a group of young about 300-yds. away. He had a .270 Winchester and I had a 30-06 Remington. Both with scopes. We put 11 slugs in her (and they were all, well placed shots) before she fell dead. The rancher, estimated the sow to weigh 650-700 lbs. They aren't like deer that you can catch standing still. Pigs 'move'! In the case of the feral hog mentioned in this thread, unless it is illegal to hunt them in Alabama... I'd have gotten a game warden or a deputy sheriff to verify the kill.

Well the photo obviously plays some perspective tricks. Even if it isn't doctored, I'm just calling bs on how big they claim the pig to be, based on the fact that they make it into sausage before even getting its weight or size verified. If you really had one of these mythical beasts, I highly doubt anyone would make it into sausage and expect people to just believe it was as big as they say it is. This would no doubt go into the record books and I'm sure bass pro or cabelas would pay some serious $$ to get their hands on it if it was legit. No reasonable person would make it into sausage without anyone seeing it unless the whole thing was a hoax.

Shooting something that size with a .50 caliber revolver is nuts!:S
I'd be afraid that would just piss it off.
I'd want at least a 30mm cannon.

The text I read said that his father and "guides" were with him carrying large rifles in case the hog should charge.

That seem fishy to anyone else?

i have not hunted hogs my self but have many family members that do often. If any of them were to hear it took you 11 shots they would agree with me that its to many, one cousin went out and shot off 1000 rounds after it took him 3 to kill one.

His dad must be a bass fisherman, they always use that stunt to make everything look huge.

If that kid were eleven, he has the head of a 6 month old child.

he appears to have a head smaller than the snout of the pig.

O RLY? :P

Measurements from the taxidermist:

To help make the form on which the animal will be mounted, Cunningham had to take accurate measurements of the beast. Here they are:

Around the head (across the ears): 54 inches.
Around the shoulders: 74 inches.
Length of snout (from eyes to nose): 11 inches.

Just for a gauge, a basketball is 30.7 inches around.

On a hog or many larger mammals, the only thing that will drop it in it's tracks is a CNS hit.

Heart/lung shots don't kill immediatley.

True story. As big as that sow was and as fat as she was... The last shot I made was immediately below and behind her ear. They are tough...

We've killed many a pig here... with one shot. At 300-yds. and a pig weighing about 700-lbs, we wanted it dead and not leave it wounded. You need to get with your family members and hunt some. You'll see, what I'm talking about. Don't get me wrong, I was raised the same way. To get that one and only 'perfect' shot. It don't always work.

After seeing the attached picture I can believe the hog was 1000+ pounds. The latest news, however, gives a possible reason for the unusual size for the "feral hog".

Yep that was in our local newspaper. I just had a feeling from the beginning that it was too good to be true. Feral, my ass. :|

No doubt, I asked a farmer friend about this after reading the latest article.

He said that pig would have to have nearly constant food, and lots of it.

I doubt a 160 acre parcel would provide enough for an entire herd of wild pigs and still develop a hog that size, unless you have some feeders set up.
