shell would explode thats what would do the bulk of the damage. just the pressure of your foot down over the shell, and explosion would be all thats needed to do the damage, wouldnt make any difference which shell it was both are still going to explode

Without some way of containing the pressure, the casing splits and perhaps fragments a bit, but that's all.

Q. How hot does ammunition need to get to "cook-off?"

A. The NRA tested this at H. P. White Laboratories some years ago. They found that rifle, pistol, .22RF, and shotgun shells needed to be heated to about 320 degrees F for about 20 minutes to induce a cook-off in an unconfined space. In no case was there an explosion . Rather the cartridge cases ruptured and in the case of the rifle and pistol rounds there was evidence that case fragments, the projectile, and the primer struck the sides of the oven but did not penetrate or cause any damage.

The powder being practically unconfined in these tests, very little pressure was developed. The projectile being heavy moved very little but fragments of the brass case did fly out and could cause skin or eye damage up to several feet.

It appears from several other tests that primers will cook off at about 400 degrees Fahrenheit, and single-base powder will ignite at about 600 degrees F, and double-base powders will ignite at about at about 320 degrees F.

If a cartridge cooks-off in a firearm it is a different matter. The effect is as if the cartridge was fired normally since the cartridge is contained and serious damage or injury could result. Remember Rule 2 - Don't let your muzzle point at anything you are not willing to destroy.

do an experiment take 2 shells put one one the ground and fire it off, see what happens then take the other shell dig a small hole place a shoe full of sand on top of hole and fire off shell, bett you the shoe gets blown up. a black cat firecracker can blow your hand off. its all about pressure around the explosion

I still think hand guns should not be available!

However I did have the opportunity to shoot a Glock the other day so I though I would see what all the fuss is about.

This seems somewhat hypocritical on one hand, but on the other it appears to be a sincere effort to become better-informed about the subject. Good on ya. Wish more people-control advocates based their attitudes upon an informed position, because IMO there are a lot of knee-jerk scaremonger sound bites out there that do nothing to improve the sociopolitical situation vis-a-vis the individual ownership of arms.

I agree that the 9mm is a peashooter; ditto for the .38 Special. However, you would feel differently if you fired a real handgun like my Ruger .357 - it's a unique sensation when one pulls the trigger on a weapon like that and suddenly unleashes its immense power - the enormous muzzle flash, the recoil, and the shock wave that strikes one's body. You can feel it in your sinuses...

I was talking with a Swedish Army helicopter mechanic last night after work when the topic of our chat turned to the Glock she was packing. I could only see the butt in her holster, so I asked her if it was a Sig and was corrected.

The conversation turned to other arms, and I told her about my (former) collection that had an AR-15, FN-FAL (L1A1), and other instruments of mayhem.

She was dumbfounded that Americans can lawfully obtain such weapons and go out in the hinterland and plink to their heart's content. Neither of these is allowed in her native land.

you might as well have a decent barrel so you could actually hit something without having to be 2 meters away from it!

There's a nifty little trick known as aiming that may help with this issue.

shhhhh don't start explaining about front and rear sights and a constant repeatable sight picture.:P

While at the range on Sunday shooting .40 and .45 a guy fired a .454 Casull revolver while standing about 10ft away from me, and I wasn't expecting it. I nearly jumped out of my shoes when that thing went off.

Yes, that's true enough. It just struck me as odd to purchase a handgun specifically for target practise. Why not just buy an air pistol? If it's not for personal defense why bother?

I've never shot an air pistol. I suspect they're light.

The point of the Mark II target line is that they weight as much (or more) than any other handguns I have, but the ammo is 1/5th to 1/10th the cost. It's allows for effective practice that will transfer. And unless you see the tiny hole in the barrel, it looks pretty good too.

Are air pistols very accurate? That's the other positive for these particular rugers. You can spend thousands on competition pistols but these get 95% of the way there for ~300.

A black felt-tip pen could even solve that problem.

Probably look more convincing to add a barrel "extension" with a .50 bore.;)

Jah, the .454 Casull is quite a beast. B| I've fired one - it was like a howitzer :o:S:D

Have you "lost the plot" yet?

Sometimes, the hallucinogenics they soak into the grips can cause the auto-violence reaction within 5 days.

Though normally it takes about 2 weeks before it's guaranteed. That way it maximizes the market demand for further purchases.

It's all a well known conspiracy that the Remington (guns, not shavers) corp established with the Libertarian Party and the AARP.

The only real defense is to grow your hair long, cut off your middle and ring finger, smoke pot and meditate about how enlightened you are vs the rest of the world.

Good luck. I'm transmitting karma and crystals your way.
