Can we PLEASE...

I just had the thought that if the government could become powerful enough to stop people from using their reproductive apparatus (rather than simply punishing people if they do, ala China), maybe they could stop people using their brains as well. Government permission to think, perhaps? It's all deliciously Orwellian.

Alreadying happening... see DU, Huffpo, etc...

Possibly... I don't read his site so I couldn't speak to that... I *can* tell you that I see more reasoning and debate, and a WHOLE less hate and sheer vitriol on the more conservative sites.

Joe Klein seems to think the lefties are particularly hostile.

Quote

This is not the first time this kind of free-range lunacy has been visited upon me. Indeed, it happens, oh, once a week to each of us who post on Swampland (Karen Tumulty, Jay Carney and Ana Marie Cox are the others). A reasonable reader might ask, Why are the left-wing bloggers attacking you? Aren't you pretty tough on the Bush Administration? Didn't you write a few months ago that George W. Bush would be remembered as one of the worst Presidents in history? And why on earth does any of this matter? ...

But the smart stuff is being drowned out by a fierce, bullying, often witless tone of intolerance that has overtaken the left-wing sector of the blogosphere. Anyone who doesn't move in lockstep with the most extreme voices is savaged and ridiculed—especially people like me who often agree with the liberal position but sometimes disagree and are therefore considered traitorously unreliable.

Such open-mindedness is inspiring.

I don't think that all liberals are that way... but the nutroots (on both sides) sure tend to drown out the more moderate voices.

Go to places like DU, Kos or HuffPo and read some of the threads about medical problems with conservative politicians (Tony Snow's cancer, Cheney's pacemaker, etc). The large majority of the posts wish death or complications on the person...wtf is up with that?

I realize that people vent, hell, look at my OP in this thread...but still.... *shakes head*

Right. Referring to a grieving mother who had lost her son in Iraq as a "media whore" was a particularly thoughtful comment. Some other considered deliberate opinions I can recall:

"We should invade [Muslim] countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity."

"We need to execute people like John Walker in order to physically intimidate liberals, by making them realize that they can be killed, too. Otherwise, they will turn out to be outright traitors."

"There are no good Democrats."

"I take the biblical idea. God gave us the earth . . .We have dominion over the plants, the animals, the trees . . . God says, "Earth is yours. Take it. Rape it. It's yours."

"My only regret with Timothy McVeigh is he did not go to the New York Times Building."

"Why should Blacks be heard? They're 12% of the population. Who the hell cares."

"Feminism was established so as to allow unattractive women easier access to the mainstream of society."

"You know, these people are being fired at every day. I'm talking about
people having a good time, these people, you ever heard of emotional release? You of heard of need to blow some steam off?" (concerning the Abu Ghraib abuses)

"If we are going to start rewarding no skills and stupid people--I'm serious, let the unskilled jobs that take absolutely no knowledge whatsoever to do--let the stupid and unskilled Mexicans do that work."

“I was going to have a few comments on the other Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, but it turns out you have to go into rehab if you use the word ‘faggot,’ so I — so kind of an impasse, can’t really talk about Edwards.”

This isn't to say that left wingers don't do the same thing, of course. But the idea that the right wing has less "hate and vitriol" is quite funny. There are right wing commentators who make an excellent living at that sort of thing.

I can cherry-pick quotes to show the opposite side as well, Bill...as I'm more than sure you know - I was speaking to the general tone of posts to those threads. Care to respond to THAT?

Like I said, neither side has taken the high road.

>I was speaking to the general tone of posts to those threads.

Do you mean here?

If so, I find the right wingers to be more angry, and more likely to use emotionally laden terms like "cut and run" "defeatocrats" "america-hater" etc. I find the left wingers to be generally less informed though.

Agreed - extremists on BOTH sides (as I said above) dramatically raise the 'noise' in the signal/noise ratio.

Actually, no, I was speaking (as I mentioned above) to the general tone of posts on the more popular left-wing discussion sites such as Democratic Underground, DailyKos, Huffington Post, etc.

As I also said above, I am *not* saying that there is no vitriol in similar posts on more conservative discussion sites...but the majority of posts in those threads aren't wishing death on the person being discussed, either.

I'd say the 'righties' tend to use a lot more sarcasm... and the lefties here certainly don't have any problems with name-calling, themselves... usually things that would invoke Godwin's law...

Can't really speak to them; I don't read them much. Nor do I read Malkin, Instapundit, NewsMax etc. I've seen excerpts from all of them that are pretty dismal.

It's on both sides, especially if you're reading follow up posts on blogs. Where I have a problem is when it becomes a part of the national media dialog. In that dept, one side has cornered the market, no cultivated the market on hate filled, disrespectful, venomous language. Sadly though, it sells and that's the name of the game.
