Man, if a black guy can win an F1 race what's next, An American?

:D I just have a weird feeling... it wouldn't bother me if it did happen, but I got a feeling it would be a dark dark day in the south if a black won a Nascar race... :|

Got a question... a good one actually... ;)

Who would get more beer cans thrown at their car at Talladega for winning?

Really? You used the pun?

Nice.

Anyway, "a black" has already won a NASCAR race. Of course, this was many years ago and nobody remembers it.

And as the car pulled into the winners circle and the driver stepped out, I'm picturing the scene in "Blazing Saddles" when Cleavon Little rode into Rock Ridge where they had a big celebration ready to welcome their new sheriff.:D

Sadly, it was even more racistly tragic than that.

Read the link I posted.

Franklin said that it seemed two drivers, Neil Castles and Jack Smith, really had it in for his father. Once in Savannah in 1962, Wendell had just set a track record in the time trial when Smith approached and told Scott that his five cars would run through Scott’s Chevrolet when the flag dropped. It turned out though that none of Smith’s cars could keep up with Scott’s car as he finished second in the race to Ned Jarrett. After the race Scott received an apology, but not from Smith. Franklin remembers, "Joe Weatherly came to our pit after the race and he said, "Wendell, I just came to apologize for the rest of those stupid sons of bitches." After a few run-ins with Smith, Scott decided that he’d had enough. Smith had wrecked Scott at Winston-Salem.

On the pace lap Smith pulled alongside Scott and started pointing at him. Scott whipped out a gun and pointed it at Smith. The Scott’s never had trouble with Jack Smith again.
Despite some driver’s racism toward Scott, not all drivers felt the same way. Richard Petty, Joe Weatherly, and Fireball Roberts were among the stars that helped Scott out. One time in Jacksonville, Tiny Lund came over and gave Scott four tires to qualify on. Most stock car drivers respected Scoot because he was a lot like them.

Formula 1 racing is, in my book, the second toughest series of racing (after Rally Car Racing). Assuming that the car itself can withstand the race to begin with, it is all about the driver.

Oh please. MotoGP takes this prize hands down.

Don't leave out the 2-wheel racing.

I agree, a lot of these sports need some diversity...and it surprises me that the teams and race organizations don't push harder for it...i mean, look at the press and interest Danica Patrick has generated for IndyCar, an admittedly struggling race series. From a pure marketing perspective, a little "controversy" (if diversity could be called that) is ratings gold.

On pure driving ability, Anothony davidson is the best British driver out there, he just can't secure a seat (read that as bring in the required sponsorship) in the top 2 teams

Ant Davidson is (IMO) a very underrated driver, but there is no way that you can state that he is better than Hamilton on the available evidence.

Hamilton is currently outperforming the world champion in equal machinery, Davidson is being beaten by Takuma Sato.

oh god...isle of man. scary but intriguing at the same time.

too far. I'm happy with spending 4 days of my summer slumming around the Laguna Seca pits during the MotoGP weekend there ;)

I've seen Laguna Seca on Tv many times, i'd love to go through the cork screw on a bike or in a car B|

I'm going to this in just over a week...

I don't watch F1 that often, but a British guy named Lewis Hamilton won the Montreal GP Sunday. He's a black guy. Way cool!

Lewis Hamilton in F1? That's not news. When Jamal Jackson wins at Taladega is when I really want to see a reaction.

even the best driver in the world wouldn't win a race unless he was in one of the top 2 teams on the grid

How do you explain Shummi winning on a Benetton?

13 years ago, when Benetton was one of the top teams on the grid? The world of F1 has changed a little since them days.

And Benetton in its current incarnation as Renault also won the last two world championships.

When he was winning his 1st races with benetton, the team certainly was not one of the top team in 92 and 93.

Funny thing is I didn't even consider his colour, just that he is a kick arse driver and young to have achived what he has. On reflection I suppose its good to have a positive role model for young black males but it just good that he is a good role model for British kids full stop.

i dont think its that cool, or another way to put it......why does it matter that a black guy won, same thing as if any person won.

I think its good. Good for racing. Good for Black people. Good for sponsors. Good for humanity.

Wow, bet you'll need some kleenex if Obama becomes president:D

Well, for one of the two I think the pouring rain at Spa definitely counts as exceptional circumstances. Rain is a great leveller of machinery.;)

And still, that was 15 years ago. You can't use it as an example to prove anything about modern F1.

Hey.. You're the one who used superlatives. ;)

I agree that 75% or the race is won by the car, expecially nowadays. But there are still the exceptions. ;)
