JohnRich 4 #1 June 13, 2007 News:Broward may cancel deal with radio station because it airs Rush Limbaugh Radio station WIOD, AM 610, has been the official channel for emergency information from Broward County (Miami, Florida) government for the past year. The County Commission, all Democrats, balked at renewing the deal Tuesday, unable to stomach the station also being home to Rush Limbaugh's talk show. Commissioner Stacy Ritter said she did not want to support a station that's out of step with area politics. Ritter, cited talk shows hosted by Limbaugh and Sean Hannity and WIOD's partnership with Fox News. "They have every right to speak, but we don't have to do business with them," she said. Limbaugh responded to the commissioners Wednesday on his radio show. He said the county's qualms about WIOD are a sign of out-of-control partisanship in the nation. "They are politicizing the delivery of emergency news, which is non-partisan," said Limbaugh, who lives in Palm Beach. "They are making weather a partisan issue." "It's a shame that people would let politics get in the way of saving lives in a hurricane..." Source: Sun-Sentinel
billvon 3,000 #2 June 13, 2007 And once Rush Limbaugh is carried, some people will stop listening, as they do whenever any extremist shock jock is added to a radio lineup. Those people need to be informed of hurricanes as well. It's a shame some people here would prefer that people die, rather than switch emergency announcements to a non-political station. That is one of the stupidest things you've said. You make a huge assumption that is based on facts not in evidence. I would think the opposite would be true, that the number of listeners will go way up. Also, a lot of people that hate the conservative talk radio hosts still listen to them. They do have really high ratings, don't you know? Your bias and blinders are firmly in place, quite easy to see that.People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. quade 4 #7 June 13, 2007 When it comes to emergency radio services the ONLY thing that should be considered is if the station was designated a "clear channel" station (not to be confused with Clear Channel the broadcasting group [note use of caps]). See; http://www.answers.com/topic/clear-channel Clear channel stations have exceptional broadcast power and reach. This was specifically provided by in the FCC rules years ago for Civil Defense and emergency purposes. If the station is a clear channel station, it should ABSOLUTELY carry any and all emergency services regardless of political affiliation. Other than that, most radio stations really aren't required for emergency purposes and in the event of an actual emergency, WILL direct you to the clear channel station. WIOD is not a clear channel station.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

champu 1 #9 June 14, 2007 The listenership issue is all well and good, but the comments made didn't address this. The motivation seems to be simply that those in charge don't want to renew the deal because they don't want to give tax dollars to a radio station that gives airtime to a person they don't politically agree with. also from the article: QuoteJudy Sarver, the county's public communications director, said WFTL and WLRN also offered to take on the role, but that she and other emergency planners preferred WIOD because of its signal strength, numerous FM sister stations and willingness to give Broward top play. So it sounds as though the technical side of this is being given a back seat. Btw, John, Miami FL is in Miami-Dade County not Broward County.

Yes, but I was just trying to give everyone a general idea of where this station is located, and Miami is the major identifiable city that most people know in that area. Broward is actually the next county north of Miami. Florida counties map: http://www.floridanetlink.com/floridacounties.php
funjumper101 15 #12 June 14, 2007 QuoteRush Limbaugh is an "extremist shock jock"? Give me a major break! Lush Rimjob, the drug addicted hypocrite, is definitely in the category of "extremist shock jock". Lush spews boatloads of bullshit, slamming everything he perceives as "liberal". Of course, when he needed the help of the fine "liberal" organization, the ACLU, he gladly accepted their assistance. Lush is a well documented liar who has had a lot of influence on the ignorant white trash that listens to his show. In many ways Lush is the embodiment of all of the evilness that represents the modern "conservative" movement. It is pretty weird that Goldwater would be considered a far leftie by what passes as conservatism these days.

But the intellignet people are those that have taken a form of Media and packaged it with a business plan that not only informs but developes a market of millions of listeners. This inturns brings in millions of dollars in advertizing. I would consider the Limbaugh's of the world brilliant when they can do what they love and make millions doing it.But this of course come from a bias view point because I'm a big listener of Talk Radio. CNN, FOX et al are a lot more exciting, and are the place to go to hear about big scary disasters, starlet DUI dramas and all the things in your home that will kill you. But if you want to hear the story of a Marine who led a unit of twelve men to recover half the artifacts in a Baghdad museum, or want the details of the latest energy bill, or want to hear about what's happening in Darfur, NPR is a better bet. Those things are all very boring, but then most news is. Sure, you'll hear about many things on NPR, but their reporting is very often extremely biased. Their own ombudsman has admitted to their trouble with being fair and balanced. I still listen to NPR a lot, it doesn't seem to me his efforts to fix that have worked. I still have a very vivid memory of a story on NPR a couple years ago that was an interview of a soldier that had recently returned from Iraq. The correspondent started the story by saying that the soldier "still could not see the light at the end of the tunnel". A little later the interview actually started. I expected to hear an obviously liberal leaning soldier stating his objections to the war/policy. I was surprised to hear his story of support for the war, and inspiring stories of how he thought things were improving so much. There wasn't anything at all about "no light at the end of the tunnel". You can correctly say that he was overly optomistic, and that the reporter was more correct than the soldier, but the fact remains that the reporter was completely wrong to put her own words into the mouth of the soldier. Her lead in to the interview was pure editorial opinion. But some will claim that news sources like NPR are not biased.[Crazy] I also will admit that Fox News is biased, but a lot closer to fair and balanced than NPR. The whole claim that NPR and PBS are non-commercial and therefore not beholding to others as are the commercial networks is bullshit. They have lots of paid commercials, they are just shorter than usual and don't occur in the middle of the show. Garrison Keillor has got to be the most boring guy ever!People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired.
