CanuckInUSA 0 #176 June 27, 2007 I have cable TV for one reason ... every once in a while there is a sporting event which is on (or some other show that interests me) and yes I am willing to pay for it. But in my market there are about 2-3 religious channels on basic cable. If I want to get these other shows, I am also going to be getting the evangelical propaganda. This is a price I must pay ... and while I am not happy with ... I accept it. I HAVE THE RELIGIOUS CHANNELS TURNED OFF. My whole point in all of this was that these evangelicals insist on broadcasting their rhetoric 24/7 either on the specialty channels or on some of the other more generic channels. There is pretty much no other religion out there (except maybe certain segments of Islam) who's mandate is to convert the entire world into Christianity. Is there any wonder why Christians and Islam are at war with each other. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

There are certain segments of Islam trying to convert the world to Christianity??? Ok, I know that's not what you meant. I guess I see your point. But I personally feel as indifferent toward the religious channels as I do toward the sports channels or the shopping channels. I mean, they're all sending a message that I don't want to hear. Shopping channels encourage consumerism. Sports channels encourage an "us against them" mentality. Religious channels encourage worshiping a certain god. All the same to me. I would just rather ignore them than waste my time being upset about it.
wmw999 2,452 #178 June 27, 2007 Lord have friggin' mercy. A church advertising on a commercial channel (I live in Texas -- it happens all the time) is no more offensive than a beer advertisement next to a church. Freedom of speech means that sometimes you're exposed to things that you wouldn't choose. Unclothed tits might be over the line, but that's a social thing, not an ethical one. kelpdiver 2 #179 June 28, 2007 QuoteIf I were you, I'd cancel my cable and let the company know why. (If you're really that annoyed that they carry religious channels.) Cable companies must carry all locally available stations (VHF and UHF). That includes at least a couple shopping and god channels. This is a condition of their monopoly. If we ever get to a a la carte system for channels, I don't know if that changes, or if the base package still includes all local stations. And I think the powers that be will successfully prevent this from happening anytime soon. We are getting closer to the point where you can subscribe to individual channels off your broadband. A couple years ago XTV came, selling a set top box to receive a number of porn channels. The same architecture could be used by any sort of media station. Give it 5 years maybe, I think we'll have options for people who just want 2 or 3 channels and don't want to pay for anything else.
Guest #180 June 28, 2007 QuoteQuote QuoteBut the shitting part in all of this is that I am paying money through my cable company to allow these Burble Thumpers to pollute the TV airways with their rhetoric. Who wins ... the cable companies of course ... because they get money from the Burble Thumpers and the cable consumers. Are you equally put out by all the other (non religious) channels that you have no interest in watching? I have yet to see ESPN or the Shopping Channel telling me that I'm a sinner and will burn in Hell for eternity. Of course, I may just have missed that bit. Same thing the libs say when cons complain about all the degrading filth and violence on TV.... "Don't like it? Don't watch it!" mh ."The mouse does not know life until it is in the mouth of the cat."

NCclimber 0 #182 June 28, 2007 QuotePerhaps a better analogy is that Budweiser isn't in congress trying to get schoolkids to all sing "Here Comes the King" - and they're not trying to get BUD put on all the money in the US. And the courts aren't trying to desegregate schools (effectively becoming Legislators) - and spies aren't being executed - and we are not standing by while a country on the other side of the globe causes the death of 14 million of it's citizens... or were you talking about a time other than the 1950s? crwtom 0 #183 June 28, 2007 Quote By that rationale, a lot of people should have the same level of animousity against domestic beers and American made trucks. If 26% of all Americans seriously believe I must be an inherently evil person only because I prefer imports - then, yes, I think would have a substantial problem with that. CaptainOKaos 0 #189 June 29, 2007 That's Bullshit, I know several atheists, & they are more trustworthy, and morally upright than most "I go to mass everyday/week" people I know, would you rather trust your 10yr old kid alone with an adult atheist babysitting overnight, or a priest? You're as wonderful as a slinkie!! NOT REALLY GOOD FOR ANYTHING BUT THEY BRING A SMILE TO YOUR FACE WHEN PUSHED DOWN THE STAIRS.
