You might want to do some research on how much malpractice issues contribute to rising healthcare cost. I think it's a pretty small piece of the pie.
One huge expense, that could be reduced is administration. You streamline processing, as well as get rid of all the commisions being paid to brokers, and the costs drop considerably. These non-medical costs are huge!
Another biggie is competition for patients and consumers' demand for the best technology available. Hospitals, fighting for patient dollars, are constantly upgrading. You want the best, you have to pay for the best.... which leads us to...
Research! I'm not sure about this, but I think more medical research dollars are spent in the US than the rest of the world combined. If we get National Healthcare, don't plan on the breakthroughs akin to what we've enjoyed over the last 50 years.
I'm not sure how to solve this dilemna... I'm just offering up some of the issues.

and I agree there are too many lawyers, but that also goes to say that you hate lawyers until you need one. I see too many insurance companies screw people over and half the time they do not have a clue what hit them.

A few years ago I had surgery. Made sure I got everything pre-approved. After the surgery, my insurance company started dragging it's feet about paying. My claim was being "reviewed". Then everything got OKed. Then it got put back on "reviewed" status for a new reason. I called every few weeks to check the status and continually got the run around. This went on for SIX MONTHS!
Then I got fed up and asked if I needed to contact an attorney.
My claim was approved the next day.

Why is that cost so High??? Because everything has to be documented, Counted, Audited, Recounted and redocumented so that the healthcare provider has all their ducks in a row when the Lawyers/Lawsuits show up.
Then you have all the compliance issues and regulatory issues that must be covered. All of this costs money. the vultures just sit back and wait for them to make a mistake so they can pounce with lawsuits.
Then you have the good old "More Government" crowd that keeps pushing more and more legislation further driving up the costs.. These same people are the complaining about how much it costs now and they are the ones that helped make it so expensive.

Insidious isn't it. Can you name 5 other governmental issues that are being pushed with an analogous strategy?

Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants
No it doesnt.. But knowing who you voluntarily married.. Well... You cant quite be all that smart.
People that dedicate their lives to helping people (Doctors). The ones that spend 8 to 10 years in College to learn as much as they can to help others and then go on to work several more years for next to nothing as interns (Doctors) deserve to be Highly paid.
The real problem is Lawyers and our Sue happy nation. That is what is really driving up healthcare costs.
Nothing is free in this world. people work hard for a living and deserve to paid a fair price for their expertise.
Insurance is available for those that don’t want to just pay as they go. But if someone doesn’t have the money to pay, It is not the doctors fault.
If you don’t pay the power bill... It gets turned off. IF you don’t pay for your car, they take it back. If you don’t pay the doctor, You don’t get treated.
No-one should be FORCED to work for Free. That is called slavery. We should not be trying to make Slaves out of our Doctors.
One of the Biggest problems with this country right now is that there are way too many lawyers. And there are more people in law school than ever. Our best and Brightest minds are no longer going into Engineering and Medicine (Things that make the world a better Place) because there is not as much money in it. Instead they are going into Law School, Something that adds nothing to society as a whole and only drains society.
You really want to fix the problem, Close all the Law Schools. Say we already have too many lawyers and only allow new ones to replace the ones that retire or die.
Do that and healthcare just might become affordable again.
