SiCKO - What are your thoughts on Michael Moore's new film?

I don't have a problem with the issues Moore addresses so much as the way he addresses them and the guy himself. Michael Moore is a very obnoxious in your face kind of person who attacks people with carefully constructed questions that leave his victims with a "damned if they do, damned if they don't" choice for how they might answer. His approach is very childish. He reminds me of the big ugly nerd in jr. high who would throw a stink bomb into the girls locker room in hopes of flushing out a bevy of naked screaming girls into the hallway.

It's unfortunate that he feels everything he does has to make noise or stink, because I think he degrades the debate over some very serious issues. I have no plans to see "Sicko", though I think the current state of health care and lack of health insurance is a serious issue. From what I hear, Moore seems to be suggesting that Cuba is a better place to live, with better health care than the U.S. I don't believe that for a moment and it degraqdes the debate because now I have to defend my own views by dissavowing Michael Moore any time I get onto the topic.

Big ugly nerd? Stink bombs? Naked girls running screaming? Dude i wish i could have gone to your school! Mine sounds like a freaking sunday school compared to that ;)

Seriously though, as an outsider and someone who has seen the film, i didnt get the impression he was advocating that Cuba is a better place to live at all. He simply took some people who were turned down by their insurance companies in the US, who were in pain and unable to privately fund their treatment ($50 for one pill etc) that they could get good treatment in a country that - according to US foreign policy at least - is inadequate at even basic sanitary conditions, is the communist pinko enemy of the free world, and is a socialist love fest.

It just sort of said to me "hey this is weird - we are Yanks being treated really well by skilled professionals who aren't charging us anything - why can't we - the richest, most developed nation in the world - have this at home, where we work damn hard and pay our taxes etc etc".

You can not have little experience and lots of wisdom.

Do you honestly believe that a person can not learn from the experience of others? It has been proven over and over again that a person can learn from the experiences of others and thus it is possible for a person to have a little experience but a lot of wisdom.

Not at all what I said. If you read my post, I include aquiring the knowledge of others in my broad interpretation of "experience." Reading and listening can be an experience and are excellent methods for gaining knowledge. My statements still hold though. Even learning from the experiences of others takes time. More time equals more experiences, more accumulation of knowledge, more assimilation, more wisdom.

All other things being equal, the older person will be the wiser. If you disagree with that statement, then you are arguing for the sake of arguing.

I know it's hard for the average American to grasp, particularly in these times of religious 'me-ism' driving our social system, but...

Elitist condescencion noted.;)

But I'll bet you've not seen a situation in those places where someone has visited the ER three times in two days, that died on the floor of the ER waiting room after several people begged Dr's/nurses to care for her, and at least five un-related people called 911 from the hospital waiting area.

And how many times have you witnessed the same in an American hospital?

Typical word-twisting by a master of twisted thinking.
"I've" seen this situation on the news, as have millions of people the world over. It was a broad topic of discussion in Singapore a couple weeks ago, and that's about as far away from LA as you can get.
No, I didn't witness it in the hospital myself (could this conversation become anymore stupid?) but rather heard several recordings of the 911 phone calls, saw interviews with the hospital spokesperson, and LA County officials. Maybe CNN, MSNBC, and Fox faked those?
How many times have *I* seen people die in hospitals because of shitty healthcare? Several.
Visit Shiprock, NM some time....it's a regular occurence there. Visit any reservation hospital. It happens consistently.

No "elitist" position from me, that class belongs exclusively to the ruling Christians me-is'ts and god-ists. Condescending? You bet your ass. A discussion at this level is contemptible.

Sorry your words come back to haunt you. But if we're talking about secondhand info, go google " Yamilet Fernandez Donate". Then tell me about the quality healthcare down in Cuba.

Again... I was responding to your words. Sorry I didn't read between the lines, inferring what you might mean, rather than taking your words at face value.

I think it went downhill when people started offering rationalizations for MM's misleading, deceptive practices. It's okay because his heart is in the right place.:S

I would agree with the modified statement. I know to many people that make the same mistake over and over and over again. They are experienced but they are not wise.

Only if the Cubans can get the same treatment...which, I am given to understand, they can't.

In point of fact, didn't Moore *pay* for their treatment?

lol, your nick suits you well.

1) he is American.
2)He does not have to shut his mouth, unless he is not abiding by the rules
3) why don't you post something instead. Most of us think Mmoron is just a BS'er.

Que? You also better check your history books before making a statement like that (and if you can't be bothered, think Vietnam and the current Iraq war - oh yeah, that one, you know, the one declared "WON" about 4 years ago).:S

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

since we're on the subject of history books, you should pick one up sometime, because neither vietnam nor the war in iraq were declared wars (not by the US or against the US anyway), so how could they be declared won? i'm sorry i know you are not american so let me explain it to you, it takes an act of congress to declare war but the president alone can move troops into battle.

michael moore is fat (sorry i had to say something to keep this thread going)
