It was called JIN-class, or Type 094. Now an image of it, according to Hans M. Kristensen of the Federation of American Scientists, has turned up on Google Earth. the coordinates: 38 degrees, 49 minutes, 4 seconds North, 121 degrees, 29 minutes, 39 seconds East. If you have Google Earth downloaded in your computer you can see for yourself--a secret submarine, hiding in plain sight near the Chinese city of Dalian. "China and the United States are in a nuclear arms race," wrote Kristensen and colleagues in a report last November. "Not an arms race of the intensity and proportions of the U.S.-Soviet arms race during the Cold War, but an arms race nonetheless. The U.S.-Chinese adversarial nuclear relationship goes back to the Korean War, but the scope and sophistication of the race appears to be increasing." The Defense Department has been keeping an eye on this too, reporting how the sub's missiles are part of a plan to "give China a more survivable and flexible nuclear force." In the DOD's annual report to Congress on Chinese military might; the JIN-class subs are mentioned, among other places, on p. 19. The idea of Chinese military aspirations is no surprise. warpedskydiver 0 #3 July 7, 2007 The new boomer is at 38* 49' 02'' N and 121* 29' 40'' E. There is a carrier at 38* 56' 29'' N and 121* 38' 39'' E. There are three 250 ft rusty subs at 38* 48' 09'' N and 121* 15' 41'' E. There are five more subs at 38* 47' 28'' N and 121* 14' 32'' E. The old boomer in the dry dock with it's missile tube doors open is at 36* 06' 39'' N and 120* 35' 03'' E. There are 3 subs in the "C" harbor with it. All three are 300 footers looking to be in good condition. There are six of those 250 ft subs at 36* 05' 44'' N and 120* 18' 48'' E. The US and Russia are still dismantling what used to be an arsenal of tens-of-thousands. If the START III treaty goes forward, then the arsenal would be limited to about 2,500.
