Afghanistan's poppy fields.

A poll for people with at least half a brain, and some interest in the situation.

Please provide a brief explanation for your choice.

Me? I actually picked option 1. Although initially I'd have picked option 2, it doesn't exactly seem to be achieving much. And that's because it no longer can.

I voted option 2 because I have been to Afghanistan and have seen what life is like there. It is subsistance farming, almost like feudalism. A rich family owns the land and allows Farmer X to work the land as long as he makes a profit (also lets Farmer X live in housing on the land).
Too many years of no profit (or not enough profit) and get the fuck off my land!
Sucks but that is life there.
Eradicate the poppy fields and teach them to grow crops for a profit as opposed to drugs - lots less money but no worries about a superpower bombing your cornfields.
Nice idea but its never going to work. In a perfect world maybe....

As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD...

Why can't the US military just napalm the whole fucking poppy crop?

BAAAWOOOOOOOMM!!!! Hell with them. :|

Why can't the US government mind it's own damn business and stop trying to tell people what they can/can't put in their own damn bodies? Prohibitiion of alcohol (or other drugs) only benefits organized crime.

Not to mention they could collect taxes on it, then...

Just like the GUN is not the problem, neither is the POPPY. It's the fuckers that use them (the whole supply & use chain not just the VERY poor farmers).

Changing the way people live by invading, bombing etc... Is a short term solution to a long term problem.

Help people to understand that there is a different and ultimately better way, would take way more effort and patience than is often demonstrated here!! But is the Right [sic] thing to do.

That would mean... no poppy seed rolls![:/] Seriously... The sale of opium supports terrorism. I chose #1!

Interesting so you believe that taking away a lot of poor folks only source of income is the way to make friends?

How much of the money goes to the growers or 'pickers'? Can't be much or they wouldn't be poor. If, they want to grow something else... fine. Growing a crop to produce dope, so as to make bundles of money for terrorists? I can't agree with that.

Sorry Chuck, but I can't imagine that the choice is entirely theirs to make, There are a lot of bad people around and the pressure that they exert is most likely great.

The solution to our drugs problem lies with us as much as it does on the suppliers.
Take away the source and they will find another.
Take away the need and there is no market.

No Market.. no more supply. Simple (If only!!).

That theory sure looks good on paper! The part that I don't care for is where the money goes. Maybe, it would be better if, those who harvest the crop got a bigger slice of the pie. The demand for dope, seems to be greater than the demand for corn.

You/we don't care about their situation, yet you/we ask them to care about ours?

Besides the fact that no matter what we do it can't be stopped Mexico still exports pot. Columbia still exports coke

Anything we do to poppies is just a minor glitch in production

You're probably right. As was mentioned earlier, as long as there is a demand... there will be production of dope. It's fast, big money and a good way to support a cause. I don't think, the terrorism is appreciated by anyone but, it's been going on for centuries just as the demand for dope has been going on for centuries. What do we do? Just sit back and enjoy it because, it's inevitible?

No!! Fix the problem we made in reaction to the drug epidemic of the early 19th century. Legalize "the illegal drugs". Make sure the public understands the effects that the drugs can have. Separate marijuana out of the equation or at least quite associating it with narcotics. Bad information on one drug can lead to people assuming that all the information is bad.

This will at least remove the criminal element. It will also Allow us to a revenue stream from the taxes. Also we can save billions of dollars not fighting a silly "war" that we've been getting our ass kicked in for 20+ years.

Prohibition didn't work and neither will the "drug war" all it does is create a vacum for criminal activity.

As far as funding "terrorists", well good luck trying to get any of the drug producing countries to make it legal. To many are making money hand over fist. As well as the power that the money provides them.

Why not! Like you said, 'prohibition' didn't work. Make that shit legal and even more accessable to youngsters. We could have stores selling all that shit like we have liquor stores or Baskin Robbins! Can you just imagine the traffic fatalaties? Not to mention all the shootings and stabbings and just the overall chaos? Because of all that whacked-out dope-heads! Noone can handle booze and noone can handle dope... they just 'think' they can. I know that from experience. Legalizing it would probably mean a drop in price.(bright side to the users)
What the government needs to do is really, honest to God crack-down on dope. Not this silly little, so-called 'War On Drugs'! What a joke! These little 'busts' we read and hear about aren't even scratching the surface. We need to get in there with the countries that produce it and don't want it and seriously help them get rid of it. Make the fines and penalties much stiffer for posession, selling and etc. Maybe, our government doesn't want to do that because they might lose out on some of the big bucks from it. I'll agree, booze is bad enough and weed, ain't much better. JMO.

Uh that is what we already have... and with the highest prison polpulation per capita on the planet. Most of the people in there are there because of drugs and alcohol in one way or another

Come to think of it... you're right! What I'm trying to say is, if, we are going to crack-down on drugs... do it! Just like everything else, this country's usual pussy-footing around things like this for fear they might not be 'politically correct' or 'we might step on someone's toes'. Because of prison over-crowding, more 'probation' is handed out. Whoop-dee-doo! Probation is like a 'free-pass' to keep on keepin' on.
