I remember some of the commentators on FOX News (American version of PRAVDA) criticizing Al Gore (Democrat candidate in 2000) saying he was like "the smartest kid in the class".
Apparently being intelligent is a big turnoff for many voters.

I believe it was actually meant to be a compliment and that even the media couldn't keep a strait face when saying it, so it came out wrong.
