Gun laws and school massacres - a price that just has to be paid?

You are pretty much as wrong as can be. The issue is gun violence.

Exactly my point. Indicating that if guns weren't as easy to obtain, people would not just use other objects.

Ease of use certainly comes into play. Specially when it comes to more "spur of the moment" incidents.

This argument flies in the face of an argument mentioned earlier, that if guns weren't available other objects would be used. An example given was bombs.

You are pretty much as wrong as can be. The issue is gun violence. If the school was blown up that is now a fertalizer issue.

You cant have it all. Want to outlaw cars so someone cant plow over a crowd?

Theorize all you want. The US has a higher per-capita incidence of school shootings than other western nations. The US has a higher number of guns per capita than other western nations. Coincidence? I think not.

Just like the fact that the USA has more liberal professors per capita than the rest of the developed world.

The fact that the USA has more shit for brains, liberal, stinky, hippy, anarchist, students per capita than the rest of the world, is no coincidence at all.

The largest US school disaster was due to explosives. I think it was dynamite not fertilizer-based bomb. It was back in the 1920's in rural Michigan. Approximately 50 kids (mostly) & adults died. The perpetrator did it in response to what he considered unfair taxes (to bring together 2 threads).

After the bombing of the Murrah building in Oklahoma City, fertilizer (ammonium nitrate) did become an issue.

We all beat our children's asses less often, which I think is the root of the problem.

It most certainly is when the child needs that sort of punishment.

Most children that do this sort of thing get away with everything they choose to at home.

When I was a child there was a loaded 12ga. and a Bolt Action Sniper rifle on the wall, I never even pondered using those in an illegal manner.

If I had my own father would have killed me outright.

I'm a liberal shit for brain stinky anarchist type. I don't go on shooting sprees. I think the L vs R argument is trite and fails to address the root cause of the issue. This is not a liberal problem. I think it is a failed school system and a break down healthy families (among other things).

Schools are supposed to provide a healthy environment for kids to learn and learn to socialize. The mentality that school is strictly for learning is bullshit. School is a place for students to bond with there peers, to learn to interact with society, to learn to be treated with respect and responsibility and to learn respect and responsibility. We all are aware of what is actually going on the majority of schools. Its a breakdown. Its a battlefield.

As for the family, when I say the breakdown, I am saying that in order for the average American 2 parent household to make ends meet in the middle class world, both parents have to work. Its an economic necessity. How many latch key kids do we have these days? We cant blame the parents for that, I personally blame a culture that fails to prepare our young for the real world (see above) and where young adults start families well before they are financially (and mentally) ready to deal with such realities. Way to many parents have children, but supporting a raising a child is only part of the development. You cannot teach responsibility, trust, problem solving and life skills to your child when you are not only vaguely present in your child's life, but you lack the skills yourself.

Guns were just as available 20, 30, 40 years ago as they are now. That didnt change, something else did. You cant blame the firearms and as such removing (or trying to remove) the firearms from the problem does not solve the root issue, it just creates other issues.

Among liberal, I am also very PRO gun rights. For reasons far beyond protecting ourselves, I think that capable adults have the responsibility to bear arms unrestricted from the government. Because once they can take away that right from us, it paves the path for them to slowly erode away at the rest of our constitutional rights and freedoms.

So, in other words you are saying that access to guns is the entire problem??? Isn't there a lot more to it than that....I agree our country is a violent place, but are we so short sighted to blame it all on guns.

I think the big problem is the way many kids are being raised in America. Many have no idea what a normal family is. Many are being raised by a TV set and violent video games. Mom and Dad are off someplace working or just doing their own thing. Many kids don't have a Mom or Dad.

I think America should be ashamed of the way many kids are being raised. Without an adult care giver that gives a rip, most kids turn out angry indeed. Violence may become a way of life. I think the problem is worsening and not getting better.

And I really don't thing there is a quick fix for any of this. Our society has evolved into a crazy place indeed. The family is often being pulled apart from several different directions. Many children are being left to raise themselves. Many are filled with hate, and anger because of this.

Despite all the pressures in our rat race society, many parents are still able to hold their families together and do a good job of raising their kids. But I often think they are the minority not the majority.

America is presently building prisons faster than they are schools. We have more prisoners than any other country in the world. Is the real problem just access to guns. Talk to a prisoner some day, and ask them what kind of a home they came out of. In most cases their childhood was dysfunctional at best. Why aren't more politicians addressing what is really wrong with this country, rather than just blaming everything on guns?

You make a good point. I am pro gun and I don't want that right taken away. The breakdown of the family is causing a lot of problems in this country. If more parents did their jobs the world would be a better place. My oldest is in 5th grade and the stuff his friends do with the knowledge of their parents is frightning. As a father of 4 I know being a good parent is hard to do but it must be done. Parents are more concerned with being the friend of their child as opposed to the parent.
The most terrifying words in the English language are: I'm from the government and I'm here to help.

No. Schools have *BECOME* a place to learn to socialize. I see the problem as twofold - schools trying to become the parents and 'mold' the children... and parents letting them.

See above - schools started taking over that function from the families several decades ago.

I agree with this. One reason schools today are so crazy, is because of the huge numbers of kids who are acting out their anger the wrong way.

Some kids have never had limits imposed on them, and they come to school thinking they are entitled to do whatever, whenever they want. And even these kids are filled with anger and hate for not getting what they needed growing up.

Many kids have giant problems with authority. The adult authority figures in their life have abused, neglected, and abandoned them before they started school. They trust noone. They come to school suffering from PTSD and Complex Trauma Disorder. Is it any wonder public schools are such a battleground.

And how do you fix all this. A visit to the school counselor isn't enough to help much if they are returning home to a crazy home each night. Many will require therapy by a skilled therapist for years after. It's really hard to fix damaged kids.

Alternative schools help many kids, but that takes money. Politicians often spend this money on other programs.

I think part of the solution would be to teach parenting programs throughout school. Perhaps the next generation of parents could do a better job of raising their kids. Usually dysfunction is handed from one generation to the next. Kids are a lot like the people who raised them. Parenting education could be a proactive step in the right direction.

Right now schools teachingt so many different things, that there is not enough time to cram in all into the school day.....

I agree with you. The same problems are going on in many other western countries. However, since there is far less access to guns, there is also a lower incidence of school shootings.

Does that mean that I think guns should be taken away from US citizens? Not at all. But the original quesiton was if the school shootings are a price that has to be paid. And I do think that is the case in the current western society.

I often wondered why students come from all over the world to study in US universities, and why our universities are top ranked in the entire world. Thanks for the explanation.:)

No. You don't need silverware to pig out at McDonalds. You do need a gun to go on a shooting spree.

I think it's apparant most can see the real problem has to do with American culture in this instance.

It is gradually becoming more corrupt. Decadent. Immoral. Very much like the rest of our Western societies. Whilst they all might not have a gun culture like America, they virtually all share the same problem of social degradation.

So perhaps the argument would be best discussed taking this key area into account. It's where the solution lies - and this degeneracy reaches into all our lives.

So what are the causes? Violent TV and video games? Family breakdown? Less discipline in school? National leadership exasperating the issue in a vicious circle? Religion?

Either way, and I've mentioned this earlier, gun ownership only scratches the surface of this international problem.

'for it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "chuck 'im out, the brute!" But it's "saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot.'

No, more like realizing that an abundance in offering of "fast food" combined with huge portion sizes has an influence on the obesity rate.

When you can prove that the food causes the person to make the choice to eat, let me know. Until then, I'll presume it's still the person's choice as to what food and what amount they eat.
