It is not PC speech. There has to be an difference between accidental and negligent. There has to be a distinction especially when you have the six o'clock news stating "A pistol discharged today and killed a teenager."

If you don't think it is PC speech then what do you call the unintended collision between a motor vehicle and something or someone else?

It is an accident. I see the point you are trying to make but there is not a concerted effort to outlaw cars. So many people believe that guns can discharge "accidentaly" due to the why the media treats them.

I don't believe that for one moment. Guns are so integrated into the US culture and psyche that even among non owners there is plenty of general knowledge. It would be hard to find anyone who doesn't have a gun-owning relative or friend.

I'm not crying. I'm stating a fact.
So I accept it and deal with it.
Some appear they would rather not be prepared for such an occurence.

I agree with you. My comment was not directed at you. It was meant for Pop.

LOL! My mother is an educated, well read person. However, she acts like she is firmly convinced that my shotgun is going to unlock itself, turn its own safety off, load itself, and pull it's own trigger, all without any interference from anyone. She's scared of it because it's a gun, not because she has any rational concept of how it works. She's scared of it, so she's never bothered to learn.

You are way off-base on this one. I have talked to plenty of people who don't know the first things about guns and those people tend to believe what they hear. Propaganda cuts both ways.

Case in point. I have a neighbor and our kids play together. Sometimes they come in our house. She found out I was a gun owner and said that she would no longer allow her kids in our house. I asked her if she knew anything about guns. She said she did not. I asked her is she was willing to learn. She said yes and the first thing I showed her was my safe. I told her if her kids could break into it I didn't want them in my house either. I showed her my Glock 17. The first thing she asked was if it could go off by itself. I assured her it could not. I have had several conversations like this.

Mothers are SUPPOSED to behave like that.:P They get special training in things like "Don't stand so close to the edge", "Make sure you call as soon as you arrive so I won't worry about you", "Don't swim too far from the shore", "I didn't spend 20 years raising you so you could become a professional skydiver",. etc.

Oh, I understand the need for the PC speech. But the death is still an accident.

The death happened due to an accidental discharge of a weapon due to negligent handling of said weapon....

Perhaps the best term to use is "unintentional". That's what the CDC uses. The gun guys are nitpicking a bit, but they (we) like to make it very clear that an action is required (nearly always) to have a gun discharge. The reason for flogging that point should be clear.

So you would approve of "Unintentional Shooting", then? (Discharge sounds like a nasty medical condition).

No, not "unintentional shooting", but something lik this:

What happened: Death/injury.

Cause: Gunshot wound.

Reason: Unintentional (as opposed to Homicide, Self Defense. Law Enforcement...).

From there, more detail can be added (gun was defective, kids playing, "I thought it was a deer"...)

So PC speech it is.

(it will be fun in the future to catch people in the pro-gun crowd when they get annoyed with other PC speech B|)

Isn't unintentional pretty much synonymous with accidental?

Unfortunately...The CDC should have the following category: "Idiots playing with guns."

I have seen this before and it is humorous. I especially like how he points out how he is an expert with firearms and then proceeds to make an ass of himself.

We no longer consider drunk driving deaths to be accidents. We call them felonies if the driver survives.

Here is another question. Anyone have the stats on how many illegal guns owned by criminals were once legally owned?

Probably most of them. One of the things criminals do is steal things.

If guns were illegal, and not made available to the general population there would less to steal from.

Yet England still has millions, which seems like more than enough for the criminal element (or the drug dealers to add to their inventory)

Yeah, but she acts that way about my dad's guns too.

Tha:Pt's because she's still a mother and had the training.

so you're saying women are too dumb for guns?

You're just making shit up now. People's general knowledge of guns is very similar to their knowledge of physics. They believe that explosions make noise in space, that when shot you fly back 15 feet from the impact, and buses can jump gaps in bridges without ramps. The most intelligent thing you can expect is people now realize that real guns need to occasionally be reloaded - far more often than Chow Yun Fat does with his movie studio FS92s.

You know quite well that is NOT what I said, and you conveniently edited out the rest of my paragraph.:P

There are hundreds of millions of guns in the USA. We all see them pretty much every day of our lives whether or not we own any. A few hundred people have flown in space and maybe 3 have witnessed an explosion in space and lived. A few dozen stunt men have driven buses over gaps in bridges.

BIG DIFFERENCE.

Yeah. I just suggested it cuz CDC already uses it. How about using this acronym: NMNSIGDGOOIO*?

Not really. There is a large portion of the country that has never handled one and doesn't understand a thing about them. With that level of ignorance, the Brady types have fun, talk to them about how plastic glocks can go through airport security, how safeties are necessary AND 100% reliable, etc.

In this case, it's not that it's PC, it's to correct a mis-statement. Gun owners aren't crying "hate speech" when someone says "gun accident".
