However, she acts like she is firmly convinced that my shotgun is going to unlock itself, turn its own safety off, load itself, and pull it's own trigger, all without any interference from anyone. You are way off-base on this one. I have talked to plenty of people who don't know the first things about guns and those people tend to believe what they hear. Propaganda cuts both ways.

Case in point. I have a neighbor and our kids play together. Sometimes they come in our house. She found out I was a gun owner and said that she would no longer allow her kids in our house. I asked her if she knew anything about guns. She said she did not. I asked her is she was willing to learn. She said yes and the first thing I showed her was my safe. I told her if her kids could break into it I didn't want them in my house either. I showed her my Glock 17. The first thing she asked was if it could go off by itself. I assured her it could not. I have had several conversations like this.

Mothers are SUPPOSED to behave like that. They get special training in things like "Don't stand so close to the edge", "Make sure you call as soon as you arrive so I won't worry about you", "Don't swim too far from the shore", "I didn't spend 20 years raising you so you could become a professional skydiver",. etc.

What happened: Death/injury.

Cause: Gunshot wound.

Reason: Unintentional (as opposed to Homicide, Self Defense. Law Enforcement...).

From there, more detail can be added (gun was defective, kids playing, "I thought it was a deer"...)

Not really. There is a large portion of the country that has never handled one and doesn't understand a thing about them. In this case, it's not that it's PC, it's to correct a mis-statement. Gun owners aren't crying "hate speech" when someone says "gun accident".
