jakee 1,563 #26 October 25, 2007 I know it isn't a law, but the fact remains that every candidate is aware (and will be even more aware now) that there are people waiting to rip them a new one for any deviation from protocol. In that situation especially I simply fail to see any real connection between a persons patriotism (as in love of and respect for one's country) and whether they put their hand on their heart at the right time or not. Political blunder? Sure! Serious measure of patriotism? I just don't see it.Do you want to have an ideagasm?
nerdgirl 0 #27 October 25, 2007 Has Senator Obama or a representative of his campaign responded? [purely speculative] Was it intentionally provocative? Speculative motives could range from intentionally furthering his feelings as expressed w/r/t wearing flag lapel pins to 'any news is better than no news.' I wonder how many were aware of the USC "shoulds" a priori? It creates a dialogue ... although probably not the one intended.[/purely speculative] It does seem less than politically wise. I can hardly believe that this was not covered during 'new Senators orientation.' VR/Marg Act as if everything you do matters, while laughing at yourself for thinking anything you do matters. Royd 0 #29 October 25, 2007 Why should those Palace Guards with the big fuzzy hats spend their days standing at attention? After all, it's only protocol. They should be permitted to slouch, smile and make funny faces at the passing crowd. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- QuoteBecause tourists like it and they're being payed to do it. On that note, I like to see those who are running for president respect long established protocol concerning the flag and the anthem, and if he becomes president, I'm paying his salary, so he needs to snap to. AWL71 0 #30 October 26, 2007 If you want to determine a persons character watch what they do. Not what they say but what they do. Talk is cheap. Actions speak louder than words. That clip "speaks" volumes about why Obama wants to be president. The most terrifying words in the English language are: I'm from the government and I'm here to help. HeadCone 0 #31 October 26, 2007 Others have already pointed out that this was possibly on purpose for the same reason he doesn't wear a flag pin. This story also makes that connection (and has the video): http://rawstory.com/news/2007/Obama_doesnt_put_hand_over_heart_1022.html I can see the point that patriotism should be about how you treat people and the ideals that you hold and not about wearing a pin or how you stand during the NA. While I don't think he's unpatriotic, I do think this is a stupid way of making the point. He fails to see how important simple gestures can be to people. On the singing: It's horrid and embarrassing. The further away a singer/player gets from the traditional singing/playing, the more they suck. I've only ever heard one exception: Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock. --Head-- Turn off the internet! NCclimber 0 #33 October 26, 2007 Thanks for the link. Considering all the other candidates were standing at attention, throughout it all, and Obama his the same, except for clasping his hands, it seems highly unlikely his actions were unintentional. It's rude when your average joe ignores this practice, but for a presidential candidate to do so, it's a big ole slap in the face.
