How to be an asshole and get yourself bayonetted.

Watch closely, someone decided to be disrespectful, and dismissve of the guards duty.

Maybe someone can get the audio cleared up.

Wrong tags... fixed it... ;)

Edited to add: I didn't see anything out of the ordinary... who got bayoneted?

Some people are so silly

Great clip. I once was visiting the tomb of the unknown soldier and saw someone cross the line. The stiff rebuke by the soldier definitely got his, and all of our, attention.

Poor guy in the video. Probably woulda gotten yelled at if his water bottle rolled in front of the guards too. Poor bastard.
Oh, hello again!

I don't have any sympathy at all. If you go to the Tomb of the Unknowns you should behave appropriately, IMO, just like you would at a family funeral.

I've now watched, and listened to, that film carefully several times. It seems clear that that civilian dropped his water bottle accidentally, and only took a brief instant to try to pull it back as unobtrusively as possible. There was absolutely no call to publicly abuse and humiliate him like that.

Andy, please understand those guards are under orders and will not fail them.

That guard did exactly as he was trained and instructed to do.

I would not want to see what some pissy liberal protester would receive if he or she chose to take it upon themseleves to stage a protest on that post.

Events suggest it would more likely be a pissy anti-gay right wing Christian like Phelps and his followers.

The difference being that if it happened to Phelps no one would be defending him, whereas if some lefties got smacked around, all the usual suspects would be whining about fascism, police states and having all our constitutional rights being stolen by the current administration. No doubt, the cost of the war in Iraq would get dragged into it... and probably some talk about Bush denying poor children the healthcare they so urgently need. And the federal debt. Don't forget about that.

Oh, the humanity.

If Phelps and his despicable gang actually got smacked around or bayonetted (or whatever it is Warped doesn't want to see) by the military I'm pretty sure some people would be 'whining' about those things.

Remember, you don't have to defend someone in order to condemn what is done to them.
Do you want to have an ideagasm?

There was all the reason in the world, to even move or speak during the ceremony shows a lack of respect for those brave men who are without a name after giving their last full measure.

I know the standard. I've been to the Tomb. They ask visitors to be respectful and quiet in a general fashion, and that's it. Even civilians quietly standing in respectful deference still don't comport themselves with rigid, parade-ground military-quality discipline without a twitch; they do the best they know how, and the best they can.

Of course I realize that. My disappointment is with the people in charge, who implimented a protocol that fails to distinguish between someone truly behaving out of line and someone who is not. Publicly dressing-down that guy like that, indeed. No call for it at all.

Why the gratuitous bash? There's no issue of ideology raised in this discussion. Please reconsider and retract that. The constant cheap shots several of you guys on here keep taking against "liberals", no matter what the context might be, is really getting old, and it's beneath the dignity of the dialogue you and I are having.

it's a tough concept - it takes more guts to defend a principle when the very visible immediate beneficiary is someone you despise

I agree - but consider it stongly applies to both sides of the aisle.

Agreed. It might be one definition of true guts.

For what it's worth, I agree with Andy's earlier post. I don't think there was any disrespect intended. We might criticise him for keeping better hold of his stuff, but it's a bit much to accuse him of dishonouring the ceremony. At the same time, I think the guard reacted correctly given the protocol of the occasion.

All this has set me thinking of Britain's Unknown Warrior (a recipient of the Medal of Honor), and with 11th November fast approaching, I thought you folks might be interested to read the inscription on his Tomb at Westminster Abbey.
