riddler 0 #2 November 11, 2007 Hmm, the aristocratically imposed King of one country tells the democratically elected leader of another country off, and the supposedly democratic Americans applaud. Probably a thread for Speaker's Corner. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

As for Chavez....voting with a gun to your head or being afraid to vote, for fear of death....isn't my definition of a democracy."T'was ever thus." juanesky 0 #15 November 12, 2007 You are missing the context of the diatribe. In a forum, where Zapatero was having his alloted time, was very respectfully requesting that Chavez needed to respect the audience, and other's countries democratically elected figures, as himself, and not to resort on name calling, and childish games. Chavez kept interrupting, Juan Carlos I asked him to shut up. Chavez kept making an ass of himself in an Iberoamerican conferences. Many interesting points were being worked in that conference. By the way, did you actually know that Chavez was illegally elected in Venezuela. The 1961 Venezuelan constitution did not allow him to go to the ballot, yet he could circle the law and get elected. Clicky It is funny how someone who cries "but you tried to support a coup de tat against me" actually tried once in 1992????"According to some of the conservatives here, it sounds like it's fine to beat your wide - as long as she had it coming." -Billvon

Gawain 0 #23 November 12, 2007 Quotewho gives if hes imposed? the guy is a symbolic not political figure. His presence at that panel is evidence to the contrary of your statement. Kings may not wield the "true" power per se, but they are very influential to this day in many of the western "democracies" in Europe, to the point that their form of government is still that of a "Constitutional Monarchy", which includes, Spain, UK, Belgium, The Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. Other nations as well, Japan, Thailand, and Cambodia to name a few. The mere fact that the societies of these countries hold these traditions so dear is political power for these "ceremonial" positions. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, but to write it off is to miss part of a bigger picture. So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! I think you overestimate their influence. Don't get me wrong, I would love to see the last ceremonial links between Royalty and Government in the UK well and truly severed, but I wouldn't say that old Liz really has any effect on the policies of the government.Do you want to have an ideagasm? champu 1 #25 November 13, 2007 I thought Zapatero was being polite in his admonishment, and it was silly of Chavez to talk over him like that. I also couldn't help but notice, and thought it was a bit amusing, that Morales was seated at the complete opposite end of the panel from Chavez. (or is seating alphabetical by country?)
