aprilcat 0 #27 November 18, 2007 I'm thinking DOG too. My dog Niles isn't big..but he's not letting anyone get in here without a fight. If you don't live here, heaven forbid you're sneaking around outside the door. He's on the job. You can get a cute little dog with sharp little cute teeth that loves you and will protect you! Not saying your dog has to lay his life down, he may never have to, dogs are a hinderence to creeps! Be safe!!!~~April Camelot II, the Electric Boogaloo! NWFlyer 2 #31 November 18, 2007 QuoteWhy did you go out to your neighbors after that? What if the person was still around? Couldn't you have just called them? That's definitely a good point and staying put was probably the smarter option. However, I could see my neighbor so I did figure that I could alert him if something did happen. It's also probably ten paces from my door to theirs. Also, to be honest, I was looking at that point for *any* other possible explanation. Not exactly rational, but that's where I was. As Kris noted, it's making it quite obvious that I do need to have a plan if the deterrents don't work next time. QuoteAlso, didn't the security company phone you? My alarms are not that type... yet. Nightingale 0 #36 November 18, 2007 Is your bedroom on the first or second floor? If I was in your shoes (no dog or weapon), if my room was on the second floor, I'd replace the bedroom door with a good, sturdy security door, with a really solid lock. I'd make sure there was a phone in that room that couldn't be disabled by taking another phone off the hook (an old cell phone with no service plan works fine here... just attach it to the charger and leave it in your room. You can still dial 911 with no other phone service). Last, I'd add a fire ladder to enable an escape out the window, and a second set of car keys. If your room is on the first floor, the bedroom window is pretty much going to be a security hole... You can alarm it, but you don't want to put bars or something like that, because you would lose your escape route in case of a fire.
NWFlyer 2 #37 November 18, 2007 Third floor. My cell phone is the only phone in the house and it's always with me (it acts as my backup alarm so I don't go to sleep without checking to make sure it's in the room). The fire ladder's a great idea for many reasons - the bedroom has a balcony but I'd still be three stories up in the event of an emergency. NWFlyer 2 #39 November 18, 2007 Fortunately, my actual alarm also made the potential thief rethink my place. I realized as well that I hadn't done a good job of making it obvious I was home. I had one light on and the TV on, on the opposite side of the house from where the entry door is. To a less-than-bright criminal, it would look like I wasn't home. More bright lights on ground level in the future for me. However this is also the guy who didn't bother to turn around and notice the man standing in the kitchen window that overlooked the very door he was trying to break into... so I'm not all that sure how observant he was. JeepDiver 0 #41 November 18, 2007 Quote I had hoped that people could respect that but obviously, not the case. Frankly seeking solace & comfort on the internet has nothing to do with disrespecting a decision you've clearly made by having a poster once again mention something you have intellectually excluded . I would protect myself with a handgun. My choice. It's simple for me to use and effective. My choice is not disrespecting you. Chastise me all you want. Yet once again mentioning something you don't want to hear has nothing to do with disrespecting you. Creating all the barriers and elaborate security arrangements you need to formulate a plan of self protection and defense is wise. Quote potential thief Quote less-than-bright criminal Quote the guy who didn't bother to turn around and notice the man standing in the kitchen window that overlooked the very door he was trying to break into... so I'm not all that sure how observant he was. Instead of viewing this bumbler for what he truly may be. A drug addict strung out on heroin or crack looking for his next fix deluded out of his mind more than likely armed with a knife of some kind. You need to worry about that guy not respecting your wishes. Not the person sitting here wondering why you didn't post for a period of 1.5+ hours after an attempted home break-in/invasion. Nonetheless glad you are ok and taking measures to protect yourself as best you see fit.
NWFlyer 2 #42 November 18, 2007 Quote Not the person sitting here wondering why you didn't post for a period of 1.5+ hours after an attempted home break-in/invasion. Okay, that made me smile ... but I do step away from the computer from time to time!!!! Even postwhores like me don't spend every minute online. FYI, I'm going to bed soon so it'll be hours before I'm back. My goal was to keep it out of Speakers' Corner territory and not get into the myriad reasons I choose not to own a firearm. That's the part about respecting my wishes that I was talking about. It goes a lot deeper than this, but quite honestly, my most pervasive reason has absolutely nothing to do with politics. You said this "It's simple for me to use and effective." I believe the exact opposite about myself. When I posted a few months ago looking for alarm options, the thread got into a bit of a tangent about firearms (and I got a few PMs as well encouraging me to reconsider my position). The post that made the most sense to me, though, was from Clay of all people. He said this "In all seriousness..............guns aren't for everyone. If you don't have what it takes to use one effectively you are probably better off without it. There are a RANGE of non-lethal alternatives to guns. There are even non-lethal rounds for shotguns. Maybe look at a stun gun pepper spray etc. " Nothing's changed. That still makes perfect sense to me."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke

billeisele 130 #45 November 18, 2007 glad you are OK a couple suggestions: most criminals will avoid noise and light, install notices on the windows that state there is a burglar alarm, install a flood light with a motion sensor pointed at your door/window, do not know if this really works but they sell an alarm that barks like a big dog - if the window breaks and a big dog starts barking that would deter most folks there are always easier targets and most criminals will go somewhere elseGive one city to the thugs so they can all live together. I vote for Chicago where they have strict gun laws.
popsjumper 2 #46 November 18, 2007 I'm really glad you're OK, Krisanne. Really. I saw it recently on some TV ad for some kind of Sasquatch show but it brought back a memory... This girl I knew had a problem with a re-visiting peeping tom. She but boards around the house under all the windows. The boards had long nails in them sticking up. She covered them with a light layer of pine straw. It worked...twice. Evidently there was more than one peeping tom operating in the area.My reality and yours are quite different. PLFXpert 0 #48 November 18, 2007 Glad you're OK, Krisanne. The bright side is it's a good learning experience and sounds like you've already taken some additional steps you might have put-off had it not been for the scare. I have one question: Do you have signs and/or stickers posted around your home making it clear you have a security system? Assuming the burglar was not a confused crack addict, if the goal is to break in, take some things, and escape uncaught it's likely they'll go to the next house that does not obviously have a security system.Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
