Recommended Posts

This is a real bummer! I don't understand it. However...IF ANY of my thoughts had anything to do with the MOVE, then I am sincerely sorry and I NEED to be "stood corrected" Just let me know either here in public (preferred) or by PMg me! All I ask is dont wait two weeks or longer in letting me know...

Speaker's Corner was specifically created for discussions of politics, guns and religion. It says so right on the main page. Indeed, the description for Bonfire includes "Politics, guns and religion and other sociological debates should be taken to the Speakers Corner please." Plus which, the original poster specifically requested that no one post on such topics.

All of which means - do not use threads in Bonfire to discuss your feelings on guns.

Krisanne, if you want to repost in Bonfire, please do so - or let me know and I will recreate the thread there without the gun comments. (And I'll make sure it stays on topic one way or another.)

Thanks for the offer, Bill ... but I'm kind of "talked out" on the whole issue at this point, and just trying to process through my next steps... starting a new thread isn't necessary. I'm surprised y'all let it stay in Bonfire as long as it did.

As with all things in life, it's a risk assessment and our perception of that risk and our tolerance for risk drives our decisions on how to deal with that risk. It's evident by some of the responses here (even the ones that don't involve suggestions of firearms) that we all have different approaches to it. As much as I'd hoped to keep guns out of the discussion, the fact is that my choices with respect to owning a gun is part of that risk assessment decision that I made before the attempted break-in, and that I'll continue to make after.

(Lemme see if I can get it moved back to Bonfire.)

They probably just wanted to break in to pee on your rug.[:/]

No, no, no... you clearly haven't been paying attention to the top topics in Bonfire.

"They probably just wanted to break in to give you ((((((((((((((((((VIBES)))))))))))"

"They probably just wanted to break in to find out if you wax or trim."

"They probably just wanted to break in to get some :D:D:D."

Seeing as he was making a Big Lebowski reference, I think it still qualifies as Bonfire material. :P Ok, but maybe it's not a top topic . . .

Krissanne,
I really like Skymama's idea on motion sensors covering your front and back yards. Cheap and effective.

Motion detected? Bright lights come on. Works well to keep sneak-around-in-the-dark assholes away. Plus the light coming on would possibly attract the attention of your neighbors.

...and it would be nice to have some light to see where to land that hard karate chop that you're going to learn.
:D

My reality and yours are quite different.

Yep, we're all over the motion-sensitive lights ... we're just discussing our options (my one neighbor wants to make sure we don't increase our carbon footprint in the process ...fortunately, they do make solar-powered motion-sensor lights so I don't have to fly billvon up to hack together a system for me.) :D

Elaine: You left your door open.
Joe Davola: I know, I like to encourage intruders.

:D:D

Ironically enough as I was leaving my neighbor's house Saturday night to go back home, he turned around and started walking back upstairs without locking his door!

Uhh.... didja wanna lock this tonight? :D That's one that I don't understand ... it's like putting on my seatbelt. It must have been ingrained in me at a very young age because I would have to consciously think of *not* locking the door to leave it unlocked.

I lock the door when I am home in order to prevent charges of "baiting" or "escalating"

I had the police once say that my "perimeter was not secure"

So the guy who jumped the fence and tried to force his way into the basement door was not at fault.:|

Of course he was not charged, but my GF was hauled in a read her rights, and they tried to coerce her to sign a confession written by the investigating officwer.

She was questioned for seven hours about what weapons I own...without an attorney, or the request for being granted.>:(

You'll be pleased to know fastening my seat belt is now habit for me, too.;)

I've always locked doors though. Doesn't matter what kind or where, if I shut a door I lock it behind me. Most of the time, this is a good thing. But, I've annoyed the shit out of loved ones & friends on more than one occasion when I've locked them out of the house and then jumped in the shower or something.:D
Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.

Unless someone else had had a different experience I've found just about every commercially available motion detector to be totally useless....

Can you tell more more about why you find them useless?

I have a few around my house, for both convenience and security. But they have their limitations.

For one thing, they detect motion better going sideways to the sensor than straight at it. So proper placement and aim is necessary.

For another, sensitivity varies with the seasons. They have difficulty detecting a 98-degree warm body on a hot summer night, compared to a cold winter night.

And neighborhood cats are always setting them off as they prowl at night.

Thanks, John. That's good feedback. Limited, yes, but that's certainly not saying they're "useless."

We're in a pretty mild climate so we'd never get anything close to a 98 degree night (we don't even get 98 degree days!).

Given where they're going to be placed, someone coming head-on to the sensor is actually quite unlikely, as we'll have them along narrow walkways that are sandwiched between a fence and the side of our houses. Approaching directly from the front will be very difficult.

And of course they'll be set off by all sorts of non-threatening movement ... neighbors or invited guests approaching, and yeah, random neighborhood animals. But I wouldn't expect them to have a "bad guys only" filter. :D

Illinoistan, where legal gun owners are of greater interest to the police than are home invaders.

This is all true, and I can scan and post a redacted report if you like.

The POS that invaded while my GF was half nude and threatened to "kill you bitch" has a rap sheet at least a yard long.

The cops had him on his merry way after 20 minutes in the station, no chargeds filed.
