Someone just tried to break into my fucking house

You should buy a handgun to protect yourself.

Can we please keep this discussion out of Speakers' Corner. Please, please pretty please? Feel free to start a parallel topic over there but right now I'm just looking for a little support from my friends in Bonfire.

A lot of freaking good your bonfire friend support system will do ya when someone gets in and rape and kills you. If you are unwilling to protect yourself with violence then it is your own fault when you find yourself on the ground bleeding. Get a weapon and learn how to use it. The cops will not protect you as it is not their job to do so. They only come into play after the crime. Your friends on this board are definetly not going to protect you. Feely good support does absolutely no good when someone is splattering your grey matter against your chalky white walls. Only you can protect yourself. If you are unwilling to do that, then you are the one to blame for what happens to you.

We respect your decisions. Well, at least I do ....

Yeah but you live in Canukistan;)

Seriously though I respect Krissannes decisions as well

Better Alarm....networking and KNOWING your neighbors is a good thing..

My neighbors....

A policeman who works the night shift in our town,,,, and cruises past his house while on shift to make sure HIS house is ok( right next door)

A gay couple one is like HUGE at 6.5" and very buff and is trey butch and has horses and is into those aforementioned devices... his life partner needs protection;);)

And on the other side of me is the 78 year old bitty from hell who would be better placed somewhere that had far more neighbors who she could measure the length of their grass for and report to the ASSOCIATION... she watches everthing and is a pain in the ass but she wants to know EVERYTHING about anyone in the area.

I also have 3 BIG DOGS.... and they want to get to know ANYONE who comes up the driveway from the road

And I have an adequate alarm system....living out in horsie country does have its rewards.. less people around and everyone knows who the potential crack heads are....and they are talked about.

And I wont really mention.... the well supplied "other" options at the ready.

Any dog will be a deterrent. Big dogs are better of course, but you don't have to go for a pitbull or a rotwieller. People underestimate how much damage an irish setter or golden retriever will do to an intruder because they are usualy only exposed to thier family-mode disposition. Hopefully it never has to protect you and you just will have one of the most faithfull companions a person can have.

If I was in your shoes (no dog or weapon), if my room was on the second floor, I'd replace the bedroom door with a good, sturdy security door, with a really solid lock. I'd make sure there was a phone in that room that couldn't be disabled by taking another phone off the hook (an old cell phone with no service plan works fine here... just attach it to the charger and leave it in your room. You can still dial 911 with no other phone service). Last, I'd add a fire ladder to enable an escape out the window, and a second set of car keys.

I second that.

Time and place for everything

Say that to those who didn't learn how to protect themselves. Their time and place is in the ground. Notice that I never mentioned the forbidden word that some on this board abhor. I mentioned weapon. That could be any number of items from lethal to non-lethal. Pick one or more and learn how to use them. If someone is strictly against using violence to protect themself then only they are to blame for what happens to them.

Then you can call me up and say I told you so. I'm making different choices about how to protect myself that don't involve lethal weapons.

And if you'd bothered to read my later responses you will see that I didn't rule out non-lethal weapons. I also mentioned that I'll be signing up for self-defense classes.

Years ago, we had someone break into our house, but our dog, Sydney, chased him off. He had gotten thru the kitchen where he had opened all of the cupboards, and partially thru the dining room where he had gotten thru the buffet. When he got to the VCR, Sydney didn't like that, and chased him out. We know what happened, because they took finger prints at our house, and caught him in the act several days later. He told the cops all about Syd. Good dog.

NWF, you said yr kittys were running around, do you think it was them JUST playing or did you notice that it was a differnt type of playing?

Nothing really different ... they were as shocked as I was by the alarm.

I love that I know my neighbors just because they're really cool people that I probably wouldn't otherwise run into socially, but I really love that I know them when things go wrong. We look out for each other. My complex and the nearby (large) condos have been getting tagged lately - sometimes with random stuff, lately with political "no more condos" graffiti. Whatever - make your political statement another way, punk.

But I came home to one neighbor cleaning another's wall of the graffiti just because it was the right thing to do. Like I said earlier. We're in the city. What affects one of us affects all of us. I like that we get that and we work together.

Do you have any motion-sensored outside lights? Those might also help. If the outside of your place was lit, do you think your neighbor might have gotten a better look at the guy from the angle he was at in his kitchen?

I do have a light on my front porch. It's on a timer. It was on. Had we had more flood lighting it *might* have made it easier for my neighbor to get a good description, though he did give a surprisingly detailed one considering.

Where we are missing coverage is in the path from the garages to the houses and from the street to the houses. There's enough ambient light to make your way from point a to point b, but not enough to deter anyone. That's what we'll be discussing in our emergency meeting and I have no reason to believe we won't shore that up immediately. My neighbors are as concerned as I am and want to take some action.

I have one question: Do you have signs and/or stickers posted around your home making it clear you have a security system?

No signs, but the alarm itself is affixed directly to the window and visible. However, it's pretty small and perhaps not obvious as an alarm.

As a side note, the cops who came by had never heard of these types of alarms; I said hey, for 10 bucks they did exactly what I needed them to and acted as a deterrent. I bet the police have mixed feelings about alarm systems - while they do an awful lot of good, they probably also cause a lot of extra work dealing with false alarms (though the monitoring companies are pretty good about screening that stuff, I guess).

Nail a 2x4 to the floor in front of the door, then prop a chair under the doorknob with two legs braced against the 2x4. Note that this works better if the door opens inward, rather than outward.

Before anyone tries to go all SC on me, I'm still not getting a gun. :P

Holy crap, I'm glad you're okay. How about just having friends over all the time that have guns?;) I only need 3 meals a day and don't snore much. :)
Seriously, the way the stairs are into your place, anyone at the top of the stairs with a 34" Louisville slugger could hold down the fort pretty well against the average burglar. They are usually not looking for a fight, just a quick score. Against a determined psycho? Dunno. We still got to go shooting one of these days. :)

As long as V's okay with that .... ;)

I would protect myself with a handgun. My choice. It's simple for me to use and effective.

***my most pervasive reason has absolutely nothing to do with politics. You said this "It's simple for me to use and effective." I believe the exact opposite about myself.

Sounds like you've had enough advice, but since they're doing it...

I don't know if I'd credit a burglar for knowing what some weird thing stuck to the window is. You need to spell it out for these idiots. As a sidenote, I had a sticker on every window & three signs around my first house before I ever actually had an alarm system.:$ I saw a security company truck once in my neighborhood, pulled over, and asked him if I could bum a few stickers & signs.

Yes, the monitoring companies do. One feature I enjoy is an "emergency" de-arming code. It's for the event you have a gun to your head and are being forced to de-arm the alarm. Instead of plugging in your normal code, you plug in the emergency code and the police are notified immediately and are supposed to arrive within minutes.:)
Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.

Congratulations, you got a thread about an event that was a big deal to someone here moved to Speaker's Corner. Do that again and you won't be able to post in Bonfire any more. (Goes for everyone who wants to turn this thread into a gun thread.)
