A dozen accidents because rain?

Only in places where it rains like once a year and lots of traffic on the highways. Hydroplane city....

A couple things I don't understand.
Detroit, has had this technology since the seventies.
Fuel prices are the highest they have ever been in this country yet, speed limits in some parts of the country have been raised to 80mph.

I had a 1961 'beetle' that got 31mph!:S

The biggest item to get better milage is weight. Lower it you get better gas milage and you also kill more people

:D:D:D

It's true. With the better cars, came stricter emissions and higher safety standards, both of which increased weight. Mileage suffered as a result. My dad had an old Honda CVCC which got great mileage too, but by today's standards, the Ralph Naders of the world would be calling for blood...

Aw yeah! I remember the gas guzzlin' tank of a 1965 Olds 98, that my folks had. We've come a long way from those days.

I hope the legislation makes it. We've needed this desperately for some time.

This is actually a good thing. I wonder if we will be able to keep the current power ratio.

The thing that troubles me about this type of legislation is I really don't think it will have the net effect of lowering gas prices or reducing our dependancy on foreign oil. It will however, raise the average price of a new vehicle.[:/]

Well, I think our cars weigh less now than they did in the 70's. They get better gas mileage. I wonder if people survive crashes better now than then???? Somehow I bet our safety record's better today than then.

AND??? They have done it without the government sticking thier nose into it. That is the whole point

Good idea. Why not have govt. mandated weight loss for fat assed drivers. :P

The safest modern cars are considerably lighter than your average pre-1970 cars.

Only if your engineers are incompetent.

Well, I remember people being pissed when the government stuck their noses into it and got rid of our Regular gas in favor of Unleaded. We survived.

And somehow I don't think that vehicle safety has come along completely without government 'interference.' We have to have those annoying airbags. People bitched about that too. They even make us wear our seatbelts. Ugh. I'm not sure what standards there are in terms of crash safety, but I'm fairly certain they're there.

Maybe Big Brother didn't interfere on vehicle weight, but somehow we were able to improve gas mileage on new vehicles while staying within stricter government standards so that we have cars that are both more eco-friendly AND safer. I think that's a good thing. Don't think it would've happened without the government sticking their nose into it. That's what I think.

Where do you stop and where do start? That will always be debatable. How far into your life do you want government? I can see both sides of the seat belt debate. How about motor cyle helmets? Iowa still does not require them. Should Iowa require them?

(ps, I do not ride a motor cycle)

You never did cite a source for your SUV safety claim in the thread I linked a few posts back (post #42 of this thread). Care to do so now?

Weight, not SUVs is the point.

How far should the gov go sir?

If that's the case, then a hybrid is the car for you. All those batteries, low to the ground.

Hybrids have the largest carbon foot print to constuct, maintain and recycle of all vehicles.

So you can't support your claim. Why not just admit it?
