BIGUN 1,314 #51 January 12, 2008 QuoteBut in any case, I think the programmable thermostat has a lot of possibilities. Here's how I'd implement it: 1) Start a utility-based program that exchanges thermostats, heater and hot water controls for free. Call it managed power. Allow people to opt out if they so choose. If they sign up they get a 25% reduction in energy rates. 2) During power shortages, the thermostat cuts back 2-4 degrees from the standard setting. 3) During imminent blackouts, the steps, in order, would be: -black out people not on managed power -disconnect A/C compressors for people on managed power -black out people on managed power In this way, managed power could also help older people who a) have trouble paying for power and b) can't afford a blackout (stairclimber, elevator, dialysis machine etc.) Not that unlike major industries that install Propane Stand-By Systems, so they can negotiate an interruptible rate with the gas utilities. Win/WinNobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard.

Gene03 0 #53 January 12, 2008 Bill, do you really think for one minute that the "cradle-to-grave" socialists will be content to stop at your thermostat?“The only fool bigger than the person who knows it all is the person who argues with him. Amazon 7 #54 January 12, 2008 QuoteBill, do you really think for one minute that the "cradle-to-grave" socialists will be content to stop at your thermostat? Actually I think we have seen far more intrusion from our home grown fascists in the last 7 years.
kelpdiver 2 #55 January 12, 2008 Quote>If you force people to do this they will just install a window unit. I doubt it. Although I am sure there are people who would do it just to give a good old "fuck you" to "the man", most people won't notice (beyond their power bills going down.) People noticed that car A/Cs weren't doing as well when the replacement freon got implemented. I think they'd also notice the 4 degree difference in the house AC. As others suggest, one can get used to less air conditioning, but I think many will fight it, in ways that probably defeat the gains, at least at the home level. Office parks, otoh, would be all over the idea, as companies would love to spend less on power and have a nice justified reason to do so. (but not my datacenters!) Somewhat on a tangent - I've had to use my heaters more this year than in the past 4 at my current apartment. I need a nice programmable thermostat that will come on/off twice a day and understand weekends. Temperature control in SF is so infrequently necessary that I have one of the more primitive solutions available.

Amazon 7 #64 January 12, 2008 I know it will reallllly be difficult... but THINK back to all the news reports.. and threads here in SC.. its been asked and answered many times.... Think of what the Supreme Court who appointed him in the first place has said in decisions of where the Executive branch has exceeded its bounds over and over. Think of all the things that Mr Gonzales told the administration could get away with.. if they just weasel worded their ways around the laws of this country. But the problem is you and your buddies think that is a good thing.... to abrogate international treaties.. and the laws of our land..hopefully it will not bring about a country that will be far different than what the document that our founding fathers authored and the right is paying lip service to. ltdiver 3 #67 January 12, 2008 Edison already offers a credit to those who allow a radio-controlled regulator to be attached to your heater/air conditioner unit. On HIGH peak days they can turn off your unit from their home office (and give you a large credit for doing so). This is only during peak hours M-F when I'm at work anyway, so no harm/no foul. I've actually ran in the black (they owe me money) during the summer when they active it. ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon
