The comparisons (46-60) he listed would apply to any significant war. Wars are expensive. Fatalities rise as boundaries become entrenched. Leadership doesn't want to harm support by taxing more to pay for it. Dehumanize the enemy. War is never a picnic.

And what exactly is the point to make the comparison? To make it last 10,000 days, or seem great that we're not even close to that number yet?

I think the only similarity is Wars kill. The media and the entertainment industries like to view war veterans as drug crazed killers. The hero of the Vietnam War was John Rambo, a highly decorated Green Beret! This shell shocked maniac worked in carwashes and as a dishwasher until a cop rubs him the wrong way. Then he goes on a one man war with society. Boy would our media love to have a real Rambo. That would prove all of their unproven theories. Lets remember that the actor who played John J. Rambo, Sly Stallone was acting in soft porn movies and teaching phys ed in an all girls school in Europe during the Vietnam war. Most Vietnam vets are very successful people. Not the cardboard dwelling maniacs of media delight. I think that this "war" as we call it was voted upon in congress. I also remember both democrats and republicans voted in unison for the invasion of Iraq. Saddam Husien surrendered unconditionally in 1991. After that time he violated the terms, if you call it that since it was an unconditional surrender, numerous times. The fallacy of no foreign fighters on the onset of the war is not true. I was in Falluja early 2003 and we were fighting foreign nationals in May 2003. How do I know/ I helped put a few of them in their eternal sleeping holes. I also saw what I believe to be WMDs'. We can argue all day long. You will pull out a NY Time article and I will call 5 of my closest friends who were there with me. I am sure you will not credit my sources, since NY Times is always right and never editorializes in their objective truths. I have spent just under 2 years in Iraq and will do so again if called upon. I may joke about retiring to a cardboard box under an overpass somewhere. I assure you I will do what most of us veterans do, live, thrive, and be successful at anything we choose to do. I do not expect pity, nor do I want validation. I do not care what you think. Nor do I want your handouts. Would you want me to impose my self depricating boldness upon you by walking up to you in your work outfit and say " I support you, just not your boss" I think your boss would be upset if he/ she heard that someone badmouthed the company you worked for and you said nothing to defend the business that puts food on your table. Get the picture. I don't care. If I am supported, thank you. If not, go play a game of hide and go fuck yourself". The first thing I do when reading statistics of anything, be it Iraq/ Vietnam or politics I immediately look for the bias. Then I immediately war game the outcome. The bias usually comes out somewhere between the "N" and the "C". Get it "DNC".

A military officer I was talking to compared them this way

"Vietnam was a War that was portrayed to the public as a police action. Iraq is a police action that is being portrayed as a war."

Soldiers are trained to fight wars, with a clearly defined enemy and objectives. Finding criminals hidden in the mass of a population is job for police who understand the culture, speak the language and do not make the basic mistake of treating everyone they meet as if they are the enemy.

Being this is the third time I've tried responding to you, the other two shut down my computer, I will be brief. I was there. Were you? Yeah, I remember you. I was driving between Falluja and Baghdad on 15 May, 2003 when I drove past a burning warehouse. You say "he must have seen hundreds of burning warehouses". Yes I have, but this fire was strange. Orange, green, blue, black, and brown smoke is not normal. Later that day an Iraqi colonel surrendered to one of the companies of my battalion. He turned his men and himself in because his men were dying of radiation poisoning. It seems that the warehouse was full of nuclear by-products, He wanted to give his men a peaceful death. So, stick that in your hat and smoke it. You forgot to mention foreign fighters? No, you didn't you are selectively using what you think is enough. I personally put some of those foreign fighters in their sleep holes in Falluja. In May, 2003. They had been training in Iraq for some time before we were afforded the opportunity to send them to Allah. You also forget the unconditional surrender of Saddam Hussein after the Gulf War. Do the words unconditional mean anything? That means that the loser does not have a say. Well that jack off violated the terms on numerous occasions. He even tried assasinating President Bush 41. All good points. Unfortunately, there is one similarity between Iraq and Vietnam that trumps all the differences: it's going to be hard as hell to get out, no matter who the next President is. The term quagmire, loaded as it is, is appropriate for both situations.

Like I said....If this were even remotely true there would have been a certain unit there in a heartbeat getting readings and documenting EVERYTHING.. The Administration would have released ALL of that information in a heartbeat... ANY information to justify their actions.

After Gulf 1... there were weapons inspectors crawling all over Iraq.. more recent events have proved they got rid of the WMD they were after. Saddam did not have any more.. but in his weakened state he made his neighbors believe he still had some. He was completely impotent as events proved in Gulf II

Thinking somebody has done something wrong and starting a war over it are two different things.

Even if you think a person walking down the street is carrying a gun, you are NOT supposed to attack him until he's actually a threat.

Iraq, before our invasion, was no threat. They had not made threats. In fact, they were quite well contained and posed pretty much no threat to anyone even IF they MIGHT have had weapons, which as it turns out, they didn't.
