Suicide robot gun

Ok, I'm neither an expert in suicide nor guns, so forgive me if I don't get it and I'm not asking this to be glib or anything. I simply don't understand.

Why go to all the trouble of constructing a robot to do this and why use .22 caliber?

It seems like a lot of trouble to commit suicide... but a .22 may have been all he could get in Australia.

.22 in the head is very effective, depending on the type of ammo. Enough velocity to penetrate the skull without going out again and then the round has enough energy to mascerate the brain. One would most likely have been enough four pretty much a cert.

  • A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.

  • A robot must obey orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.

  • A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

Yeah, pretty sure this one wasn't "3 Laws Safe" by design.

And to be honest, not really sure it was much of a "robot" either; sounds more like a device to pull a trigger with a simple electrical switch.

My guess would be so he couldn't chicken out.

Unless there was a directional laser tracking beam integrated into the robot, all he'd have to do is duck if he chickened out.

What he said.>"Contrary to what you may think after having watched The Jackal, the rather weak .22 is the preferred ammunition for actual hitmen. The little stingers are rather quiet, and they usually lack the power to penetrate more than one bone. This simply means that after breaking through one side of the skull, the bullets will ricochet around inside of the skull, making mincemeat of the grey matter inside."

Not to be gross, or anything, but unless you use a long (rifle-length) barrel, 22LR rarely has the energy to penetrate the skull unless it hits a weak spot. A law-enforcement friend of mine has a neat scar where a 22 hit him dead in the middle of the forehead, bounced off, and dug along the bone under the skin to the back, then exited.

The old-school hitmen would make sure the bullet entered through the base of the skull for best effect; Mossad hitmen used to just empty 20 rounds of .22 into the chest to make sure it was cole-slaw in there.

I think his choice of caliber had a lot to do with the fact that in Australia, virtually all guns are banned. Clearly, that prevented this terrible gun-related death really effectively. :S

Most suicides don't get to shoot multiple times. He set it up to pull the trigger more than once. I assumed he lay down to keep his head in one place. Actually pretty ingenious. More than one chance to get it right and no flinching.

I see a Law and Order episode in the making.

Try REALLY hard to not use the word FACT, when you mean I THINK.
There are lots and lots of guns in Australia. there is a requirement to have a valid "need" or use for a gun before you can get a permit.
we have a total ban on assault type guns. but we are no where near having "virtually all guns banned"

Most likely just a simple case f making do with what you have at hand. He probably owned the 22 already, at 81 he would need a good reason to walk out and buy a larger calibre.
You can get guns here, but not over the counter same day service

Sad that he had to kill himself and make other people suiffer for it. the workers did not deserve the sight or memeory of the old guy

Aww....workers have a bad memory....poor workers....now they will suffer with post traumatic syndrome for the rest of their lives, will need a shrink, and medication to cope with the rest of their lives. I feel so soory for them.
