peregrinerose 0 #3 March 25, 2008 It seems kind of silly to me to pass a law outlawing something that isn't harmful to anyone just because it bugs a few people. I think it's a stupid fashion trend too, but making it illegal isn't right either. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
Shotgun 1 #4 March 25, 2008 Quote You want the government to pass laws regarding how a person can dress ... It sounds like it would only apply to schools... But yeah, I don't really think it's the government's place to be telling people how to dress.
freeflybella 0 #5 March 25, 2008 Quotethe fashion statement has a back-story -- it was made popular by rap artists after first appearing among prison inmates as a signal they were looking for sex. Also, I thought it was just a fashion interpretation of the fact that inmates couldn't wear belts... why would a bunch of rappers pick up on a statement about soliciting gay sex? kallend 2,102 #7 March 25, 2008 I went to a high school boys gymnastics meet 2 weeks ago (my son is a former state champ and now a coach). A couple of the contestants had the droopy look in their 'form pants' (worn for the pommel horse event). It didn't seem to have occurred to them that the droopy pants actually get seriously in the way of getting a good score in the event!... The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one.

If it can be stopped in schools, so my younger kids can't look at it and think its cool then that is one less battle as a parent I have to fight. Whats wrong with dressing respectfully? I know my ideas of respectful dress vary from others ideas, but I seriously doubt anyone thinks someone dressed with their ass hanging out of their britches is dressing respectfully. If you dress and represent yourself in such a way that it suggests you deserve respect and that you respect yourself, then you will get a lot more respect from those around you. First impression goes a long way.

They ARE going to be exposed to all sorts of crap in life. Just trust that you gave them the foundation of proper behavior to make their choices the right way. If not, it may already be too late...no matter what they see in the world.

They will be attending a private school next year, because IMHO, public schools have gone way beyond absurd. Did you know that in Florida public schools, in 3rd grade when kids take the FCAT for the first time, if they don't pass they will be retained??? Doesnt matter the least bit what kind of grades they make thru the year. My daughter has always been a straight A student. However, she almost saw this as a reality last year. Its unfortunate, that like her mother, she too is not good at taking tests.

We need to get away from this automatic assumption that just because we want something to get done, that therefore the Government must pass yet another law.
