"From what I understand, they were considered pretty good kids," Martin said. "But we have to take this seriously, whether they were serious or not about carrying this through, and that's what we did."

If these are good kids, I would hate to see their basis for comparison to "problem kids".

Why don't we spank kids any more??
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

Unfortunately, it doesn't surprise me. And you will likely hear defense of these children - "they didn't mean it." (or they promise to have the safety on)

Our society, as a whole, is accepting of too many excuses, tolerating a lack of personal responsibility, raising a generation of those that use and abuse others without consequence. My nephew is a good example - he has SPAT in my sisters face. . . and it was allowed. When I was raising my stepson, I was the "evil stepmother." But it wasn't my job to be his friend. I had rules and expectations. And rule one was to respect his Father and I (his mother thought it was "cute" when he would call his dad a "scumbag" - which he absolutely is NOT)

"We have good kids."[:/]

They were only acting out. PHHFFFFT.
Think of the children.
“The only fool bigger than the person who knows it all is the person who argues with him.

"This is an isolated incident, an aberration. ... We have good kids," Center Principal Angie Coleman told the newspaper."

From working with adolescents for the past several years (1982) I'd say the problem most likely begins at the home, with the parents (or lack thereof). JMHO

I think that goes without saying. But what I have questions about is how they organized this. For a group of children to come together and organize something so malicious is pretty amazing. I'm wondering if these are kids who, individually, probably wouldn't have made such a violent plan and who behaved differently because of some group mentality or something. Or are there that many kids in one third-grade classroom who have absolutely no conscience? That's a scary thought. I can imagine "bad" kids acting out, but most kids who act out still have some feeling for other people...at least I hope.

Like Mitchell Johnson, who was spanked by a teacher, then went back to school the next day with a gun, shooting and killing that same teacher along with a few other people?

Yeah, spanking is the answer. :S

Well obviously in that case, spanking wasn't what made him kill people, it was the gun's fault.

I believe your example in no way indicates that spanking is NOT the answer.

We (at least I) have no idea how Mitchell Johnson was being raised at home. If his parents had introduced a good paddling to him previously, the school spanking may have produced a different result.

And just to be clear, I don't think that spanking the boy is what caused him to turn into a murderer. I would imagine that he was mentally disturbed for some other reason. But spanking obviously did nothing to prevent his bad behavior (as is the case with most juvenile delinquents).

And in this particular story, there is no news of whether the kids involved were spanked or not. (I'm pretty sure it's not illegal to spank your children in Georgia.) So it's silly to think that a lack of spanking had anything to do with this.

How about spanking plus bullet-proof vests for all?

You hit that right on the head. It sure makes me wonder what kind of up bringing a third grader has had when they bring a knife to school to attack a teacher. I seen this on the news this morning and it started from one of the girls being put in time out by the teacher.

I may be getting old but I got to see all the cool bands.
