tbrown 26 #27 August 1, 2008 QuoteEven in places where local government has legalized it (CA) the feds are comng in and shutting down the "drug stores". Well that's because the Feds refuse to recognize the validity of voter referendums in some thirteen states now. This bill, if passed, would knock out the underpinnings of Federal policy to go after these LEGAL operations in those states. Barney Frank ! He's our man ! If he can't do it, nobody can ! (Ron Paul too, I guess he's co-sponsoring this bill.) Your humble servant.....Professor Gravity !
rhys 0 #28 August 1, 2008 I was told, if you are busted by the feds in CA for pot, you have to go the a CA court and the charges will be thrown out and you walk home without a conviction. Is this correct? doubtful. And it would depend on where you are - San Francisco isn't the same as Fresno. But possession is a misdomeanor in the state, or even just a minor fine. There is also Prop 36 for first offenders which directs them to drug counseling instead of jail.

Kind of sad isn't it Actually when you look at the size of the enforcement and corrections budget it is a very important issue. Whether or not you agree with the direction the bill proposes to take the country, I don't think you can call the issue insignificant.

Until they *do*, however.... Wink Holy shit I tend to agree with you. It's a mistake to legalize it completely, I think. If corporations start to make money from it, they'll genetically engineer it with complex cancer-causing chemicals, add filters, make it look cool in movies and cause another health disaster. Look what they did to tobacco - that shit in cigarettes ain't natural, and it's probably the leading cause of death in America (between the heart disease and cancer caused by it). In the Netherlands, companies are prohibited from growing or buying marijuana. People grow it in their basements and sell it under the table to the coffee shops. It keeps the product natural.Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

bodypilot90 0 #41 August 1, 2008 QuoteBecause they fine you. All my friend ever busted for pot had to pay some hefty fines. Maybe that isn't the norm, I made it a priority to not get arrested for the same. You hire a lawyer, more money. Or you go to jail and make money for some corporation. It's very simple.....Don't break the law and you will not have to pay any fines and go to court.

As I said - I think it should be legalized and taxed - all of it, not just pot. That said... if you KNOW something is against the law and you do it anyway, you don't have much reason to bitch if/when you get caught. Unfortunately, there's WAY too many truly idiotic laws on the books.Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim. POPS 9708 , SCR 14706
