To the Folks Across the Pond: Europe, the EU, Lisbon Treaty

Recommended Posts

So, Ireland has put a wrench in the works of the grand EU scheme of things and I was curious of some of the opinions of our dz.com gang over there.

If I understand this correctly, the Lisbon Treaty is a follow up from the failed referendum votes in France and Belgium or Netherlands (is that correct) a couple years ago.

Now, Ireland has stumped the progress of the compromise (the Lisbon Treaty), which ironically, none of the other EU members are putting to vote in any kind of referendum. Not that it matters, as the commitment must be 100% for the treaty to be adopted EU-wide. So, Ireland will vote again (next year perhaps).

I know we have our issues here in the US, but holy-f**k**g-sh*t-batman, how many of you are aware that your nations' sovereignty are being given away like this?
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

Yeah, this particular Brit knows and isn't very fucking happy about it either.

The trouble is those gutless bastards in Downing street promised us a referendum on whether to adopt the EU constitution and have now backed out on that promise claiming that the Lisbon Treaty isn't a constitution.

Luckily Ireland did put it to the vote and kicked it out. Now that should be the end of the matter but Eurocrats being what they are have decided that they didn't like Ireland voting No so they want them to vote again. Presumably their idea is to keep having referendums until they get the answer they want.

Personally I think the EU should go and fuck itself. Common market, yes. EU superstate, no.

Unfortunately the EU is mophing into something that it was never s'posed to be.... I'm all for a European Common Market (to compete against the rest of the world) but not a United States of Europe (too much history to be overcome).

This is just the more reason for the Brits to support ratification of the Lisbon treaty: notably the Treaty provides a mechanism for the exit of a member-state from the EU.

Personally I'd rather see Great Britain and Ireland leave the EU today than tomorrow. It's a better European Union without...

Its outrageous, Ireland vote, say NO and are told. We'll make you vote again so you can get it right:S The treaty is deliberatly vauge so that no one can understand the damn thing. Who in their right mind is going to vote for something they have no idea about? I'm Pro Europe but would have voted no on this occasion.
