BikerBabe 0 #26 September 4, 2008 ah bill, stealing my spotlight. i was going to make a new thread based on the results of my other thread....but you arrogant elitist! you stole my thunder! I sincerely hope that people recognize this for what it is. one already did not.... By the way...i *want* my president to be "elite". I don't want some stupid schmuck leading the country. I want someone smarter, more compassionate, more understanding, and more qualified than I am. This whole "everyman" concept is a huge stinking pile of shit, IMHO. I don't want an everyman to lead the country, i want Superman! ok, that's a bit much, but you get my drift. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup! lawrocket 3 #28 September 4, 2008 No, billvon. Note that I provided an express exception to those offering goods and services to others - and not merely selling themselves. Objectively, bill - you DO know more about skydiving, and it is your job to teach these people. Objectively - you do not know more about "caring" than I do. You cannot point to objective qualities that make a person better, worse, kinder, etc... I believe that you misconstrued my statement. My wife is hotter than your wife. billvon 3,070 #32 September 5, 2008 >you DO know more about skydiving, and it is your job to teach these people. Ah, but do I know more about swooping than that guy landing the wrong way in the pattern? Perhaps not, and he _surely_ thinks I do not. Yet I am elitist enough to think that I do know more than him, and arrogant enough to talk to him about it. >Objectively - you do not know more about "caring" than I do. Didn't claim I did. >You cannot point to objective qualities that make a person better, worse, kinder, etc... You just listed one such objective quality in your first quoted line above. I agree that people will indeed disagree, so perhaps it's not completely objective - that's where arrogance comes in, the knowledge that you are most likely right even when others doubt you. billvon 3,070 #38 September 5, 2008 >What about newbies forced to downwind land because the elitist got down >first and set the pattern? And got hurt? Yep, sometimes odd things happen. But whatever you do, DON'T talk to them about it! They were probably right to set it downwind, and you certainly wouldn't want to be called an arrogant elitist by calling them on it. Best to just be humble, and see if anyone else gets hurt. Unless, of course, you think you know better than the skygods.

I feel someone is being elitist and arrogant when they make an agrument that impunes or makes fun of someone. They imply someone has less education or inteligance than them because they do not agree with them. They think the other is stupid because they can not understant how anybody can be so stupid so as not to agree. (with them) Example, your treatment of many here to the global warming topic. You are correct in you assumptions and anybody that does not agree with you is treated as stupid. In this light do you think the terms are correct?"America will never be destroyed from the outside, if we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves." There are popular beers I just don't like, and I will inflict my opinion of them upon anyone who asks. Lately I have been tending to drink elitist beers like the Lost Abbey line, Stone Brewing, Alesmith and the like. Since I'm the 'latest' one to use that 'trick' I'll ask.... Is that a personal shot at me? Nope. It runs rampant throughout the internet as a tactic. If I was going to call out individuals on it, I believe we'd be exceeding our bandwidth limit. Bill sometimes teters on condescension, however I believe it is not intentional, but you, that is another story entirely.
billvon 3,070 #49 September 5, 2008 >I think the terms being discussed here are not being looked at from the >right perspective. I agree! When you define "elitism" as "thinking you have the capacity to decide who is inferior or superior" and "arrogange" as "thinking you have superior rights" then I am indeed an arrogant elitist, as are many people here (and as many politicians are.) Heck, I've worked hard for many of the things I've accomplished; some (like RW world records, the American Airlines demo and the Wireless Power stuff) are things most other people would have trouble trying to do. But that's true of many people here. Many here have things they are good at, things they are proud of and things that put them head and shoulders above the rest. >Example, your treatment of many here to the global warming topic. You >are correct in you assumptions and anybody that does not agree with you >is treated as stupid. In this light do you think the terms are correct? ?? Not at all. I think people who don't understand basic chemistry and physics are less than intelligent; that doesn't mean they agree or disagree with me. Here's an example: "The expansion of the upper atmosphere caused by global warming is increasing the radiative surface of the planet and thus mitigating the increase in temperature" - I might disagree, but that's not a "stupid" argument. "Global warming is false because Al Gore is a fat jerk, and there's not much CO2 anyway, and the liberal media conspiracy payoffs greed evil blah blah" - likely doesn't understand any of the science. Does it make me arrogant that I think I understand science better than someone who thinks that CO2 in its present concentrations isn't a greenhouse gas? Yes, it does. And I can live with that.
