Soldier forced to sleep in car after hotel refuses him a room

Corporal Tomos Stringer, 24, had been told by hotel staff that it was company policy not to accept members of the Armed Forces as guests.

A soldier since the age of 16 and veteran of multiple tours in Northern Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan, Cpl Stringer had travelled to Surrey to help with funeral preparations for a friend killed in action.

Cpl Stringer, who was not in uniform, presented his army warrant card when asked by the hotel for proof of identity. After the receptionist refused him a room, he was left with no choice but to bed down in his tiny, two-door car, his wrist, broken during a convoy ambush, cased in plaster.

His mother said; “I’m very, very angry. It’s discrimination. They would never get away with it if it was against someone of ethnic origin.” She added: “In America, they treat soldiers as heroes. We went to Disney World with Tomos and the whole family was moved to the front of the lines. Everybody was standing up and clapping and cheering. Here, soldiers can’t even get a bed for the night.”

The hotel's response, in the interest of balanced reporting, was that there was no blanket policy in place, but they had experienced some trouble with soldiers recently, and management was evaluating it on a case by case basis.

lol yeah members of the military can be a rowdy bunch.

So do they keep a occupation list of every person they had problems with? Oh you’re an accountant we had a problem with your type before so no room, Lawyer same thing, and don't any of you trouble making office mangers think about coming as well?

Why do they seam to think it ok to ban some one based on their occupation and not as an individual? if it as based on any other trade it would seam ridiculous.
SO this one time at band camp.....

As Skyrad and I said, in passing in another thread - it's disgusting and the company should be damned ashamed of them selves. Even though some soldiers may have caused trouble in the past that's no excuse for a blanket ban ... Some families may have caused trouble too, does that mean all families should be banned?

P.S the Hotel is owned by an American company:P

It would seem that little has changed from the time when Rudyard Kipling wrote the following poem, "Tommy" (not the rock opera...that was The Who;)

TOMMY
I went into a public-'ouse to get a pint o' beer,
The publican 'e up an' sez, "We serve no red-coats here."
The girls be'ind the bar they laughed an' giggled fit to die,
I outs into the street again an' to myself sez I:
O it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, go away";
But it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play,
The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play,
O it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play.

I went into a theatre as sober as could be,
They gave a drunk civilian room, but 'adn't none for me;
They sent me to the gallery or round the music-'alls,
But when it comes to fightin', Lord! they'll shove me in the stalls!
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, wait outside";
But it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide,
The troopship's on the tide, my boys, the troopship's on the tide,
O it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide.

Yes, makin' mock o' uniforms that guard you while you sleep
Is cheaper than them uniforms, an' they're starvation cheap;
An' hustlin' drunken soldiers when they're goin' large a bit
Is five times better business than paradin' in full kit.
Then it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, 'ow's yer soul?"
But it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll,
The drums begin to roll, my boys, the drums begin to roll,
O it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll.

We aren't no thin red 'eroes, nor we aren't no blackguards too,
But single men in barricks, most remarkable like you;
An' if sometimes our conduck isn't all your fancy paints,
Why, single men in barricks don't grow into plaster saints;
While it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, fall be'ind",
But it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind,
There's trouble in the wind, my boys, there's trouble in the wind,
O it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind.

You talk o' better food for us, an' schools, an' fires, an' all:
We'll wait for extry rations if you treat us rational.
Don't mess about the cook-room slops, but prove it to our face
The Widow's Uniform is not the soldier-man's disgrace.
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Chuck him out, the brute!"
But it's "Saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot;
An' it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' anything you please;
An' Tommy ain't a bloomin' fool -- you bet that Tommy sees!

Of course, this country has its own history of maligning its military....John Kerry's infamous remark about not studying and getting stuck in Iraq, or the treatment GIs received when coming back into the US from a tour in RVN in the 1960s and 70s.

"A man can never have too much red wine, too many books, or too much ammunition"...Rudyard Kipling

I don't know...I've never been out with skydivers where things got broken and fights broke out between friends just for the fun of it. Sure the conversations were always loud and embarressing but nothing ever got broken.

Funny story - my good friend and I were driving from Birmingham, AL to Z-hills, FL for the thanksgiving boogie. That was the day of the Iron Bowl football game between Alabama and Auburn. Our plan was to drive as far as we could, then stop and get a motel room half an hour before the game started and watch it on TV with all the beer we could drink. We got so loud whooping it up late in the game when Alabama scored to go ahead, and the phone rang. My friend picked it up, talked shortly then hung up. Told me we needed to tone it down. It was the front desk calling because our room neighbors complained. The rest of the game we whooped it up, fist-pumping the air and high fived furiously, without so much as a sound from our mouths. :D

In the FURTHER interest of balance, DID THE HOTEL THEN STATE THAT THERE WAS FOUND TO BE CAUSE TO REFUSE THIS PARTICULAR SOLDIER a room? You know, "case by case"? :S
