No troops committed at Dien Bien Phu?

I bet you think WWII started in Dec 1941, and WWI in April 1917, too. Very parochial.

March 30-May 1 - The siege at Dien Bien Phu occurs as nearly 10,000 French soldiers are trapped by 45,000 Viet Minh. French troops soon run out of fresh water and medical supplies.

The French urgently appeal to Washington for help. The U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff now consider three possible military options: sending American combat troops to the rescue; a massive conventional air strike by B-29 bombers; the use of tactical atomic weapons.

President Eisenhower dismisses the conventional air raid and the nuclear option after getting a strong negative response to such actions from America's chief ally, Britain. Eisenhower also decides against sending U.S. ground troops to rescue the French, citing the likelihood of high casualty rates in the jungles around Dien Bien Phu. No action is taken.

As has been demonstrated here before I'm not above mistake. However, I was never aware of appreciable number of US troops at Dien Bien Phu.

Maybe you should research who started the Vietnam war.

What does your question have to do with US troops? You asked who started the war.

I just love it when you split hairs like that. .

YOU ask the wrong question and somehow it's MY fault?:S

Try as you might you you can't use semantics to turn this one. Classic passive-aggressive. You ask a question, I respond and you ignore. You implied there were US troops commited at Bien Dien Phu. I'm not aware of any. You're lack of response indicates you can't support your claim, and then you try to re-direct. Is that part of the Lib handbook?:S

I never asked who started the war. I know who committed troops in large numbers, thereby escalating what had been mostly foriegn aid and a scattering of advisors to a full shooting war.

No, you inferred "US", I implied no such thing.

Funny. I know you'd like to go back to 1950 but aid doesn't equal commiting troops to a shooting war. That didn't happen in appreciable numbers until 1962.

No troops committed at Dien Bien Phu?

Forgive me for assuming you meant US troops. Whose troops were you referring to?

Let's see...I beleive that's Commandment #22

You must always ignore the message and attack the messenger. When stuck, remember the tactic that won't reveal to other Elitist Leftwing Liberals your unwillingness to rebut the issue under discussion or your inability to think or say anything original: smugly change a couple of your adversaries' words, parrot and repeat their comments back to them verbatim and even if it isn't true, by all means always be sure to accuse your opponents of using the very tactics the Elitist Leftwing Liberals try to hide, remembering all the while that Unca Lenin would be proud as punch.http://alohahawaii.home.att.net/leftwing.html

IRONY SCORE 10/10.

You asked the wrong question. You made incorrect assumptions. And it's all MY fault. :D

Nope...that would be #24

The FACTS are that you asked about starting the Vietnam War, and I responded accurately. You then ASSUMED I referred to the US when I clearly wrote "the French" in the previous post.

I realize that you do not always mean what you post. However, I am not a mindreader, and can only reply to what you post. If you wish me to reply to something else, you have to post it. I don't have access to the secret airdvr dictionary of "what I really meant instead of what I posted". (With acknowledgements to Billvon).

>You must always ignore the message and attack the messenger.

When you ask the wrong question and get an answer you do not like, it is not the fault of the replier that he did not read your mind.

This is an Internet forum, and the only knowledge someone has of your intent is what you have written. If you ask "were there any troops at X?" and you meant any American troops, it is unreasonable to expect someone else to conclude that you really meant American troops.

You guys sure do stick together. I guess talking about Ike's response to a French request for troops wasn't clear enough. I won't bother retracing the thread.

President Eisenhower dismisses the conventional air raid and the nuclear option...

I'll have to consult the handbook on this one.

Sure! Because it would prove you wrong!

It's too bad (for you) that a complete chronology of the exchange is there for anyone to read. The issue of committing troops came up before you ever mentioned Ike and US troops.

Has anyone else noticed the extreamly high percentage of non hostile fatalities that are occuring every month in Iraq? Something isn't right.
When an author is too meticulous about his style, you may presume that his mind is frivolous and his content flimsy.

Depends how you look at it. Violence is way down here. But non-hostile fatalities are going to be the same. Therefore the percentages are going to be high.

Or: Violence is way down here. People are bored. Its the end of the Tour for a lot of people. Mistakes are going to be made. Therefore the percentages are going to be high.
