Palin & Rape Kits - Billing the Victims

Recommended Posts

Quote

Victims of crime should never, ever, ever, be charged for the collection of evidence! That is what I meant.

That Wasila police chief who opposed the corrective legislation is out of his mind!

You mean, the guy Palin hired and who then implemented the policy? The same guy who knew his predecessor was fired for opposing Palin. The guy who knowing full well what happened to his predecessor for opposing Palin, spoke out against the corrective legislation.

But to go a step beyond - who cares what she did do or didn't do in terms of charging people for rape kits? It's an emotional argument, not a logical one. Indeed, I'd be willing to bet that no rape victim was ever forced to pay $100 out of pocket, even given that policy, nor was anyone ever not examined based on their inability to pay. (And given the size of Wasilla, I would be surprised if that was even a common occurrence.)

So far I have not been impressed by Palin. I would be most impressed if, this once, she stood up and said "yes, that happened while I was mayor of Wasilla. So what?"

Amen. I actually like Palin, but I think the campaign puppet strings are a bit too tight.

The extreme pro-life stance irks me, but I don't think politicans will be passing a law regulating abortion anytime soon... so who gives a flip!?!

1 in 5 VPs become President mid-term via Constitutional succession. It's happened twice in my lifetime, 3 times in my parents', 4 times in my grandparents'. McCain is 72, has a body which was ravaged (read: prematurely aged) by 5 years as a POW, and has had cancer. And Presidents do sometimes come into other harm's way.

If abortion laws change for the drastically more restrictive, it will be due to Supreme Court rulings which weaken Roe v. Wade. The SC justices are appointed by the President. The SC justices appointed by Nixon, Reagan, Bush 1 and Bush 2 have drastically affected the laws of this land. So if Palin becomes VP, she could do that, too.

And that's why people give a flip.

Andy908 is correct. Perhaps the most important thing the president does is appoint supreme court justices, and the SC impacts your every day life in a very substantial way. Far more than any decision made by a sitting president. So keep that in mind when you vote in November, regardless of what side of the debate you are on.

I'm concerned that she does not support abortion even in the case of rape. Perhaps you both are correct, I just have a hard time seeing such an extreme law passed on such a heated issue. That's a pretty good recipe for political turmoil.

Possible, sure. I just don't see it as a likely threat.

Likely or not, it's distinctly possible.

However, it is just a symptom of her extreme positions in a number of areas. This woman does NOT represent mainstream America.

Sarah,
I would never want you to become a "silent observer." I said what I said to draw attention to the importance of SC selections relative to who one votes for in November. A given candidate will most likely appoint SC justices that support their position. Vote accordingly.

I think rapists should be shot before they ever get their pants down.

So you believe that we should execute people with only suspicion that they'll commit a crime? I guess that demonstrates how little value you recognize in the Constitution.

It's cognitive dissonance because he can't bring himself to acknowledge Palin's true positions.

Confusing comments with legislature again, Professor?

Are you really claiming that Palin is a liar? That the GOP platform is a pack of lies?

Why don't you show me where Palin did ANYTHING like that while governor. Show me the bill to actually change the 14th Amendment.

Until then, you'll forgive me if I refrain from your Chicken Little antics.

Hmm. Happens in North Carolina too where the governor's a Democrat. I don't think he's any more to blame than she is.

Apperently NC is in violation of federal law.

Nationally, victims' advocates have for years reported scattered instances of rape victims being required to pay for their forensic tests, says Ilse Knecht of the National Center for Victims of Crime in Washington. Those complaints have subsided somewhat after Congress in 2005 passed a law requiring states to provide rape exams free of charge or reimburse victims for the costs, says Knecht, whose group supported the provision.

"The reason we passed the legislation was that we saw it was prevalent enough to be a pretty considerable problem," Knecht says. "There are no other victims of crime that end up being billed for evidence collection."

The Senate version of the legislation that included the rape-exam provision was sponsored by Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware, the Democratic vice presidential nominee. Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama was one of 58 co-sponsors; Republican presidential nominee John McCain was not.

Obama wrote legislation in Illinois to REIMBURSE rape victims for charges - but yet, Illinois is STILL charging rape victims. Maybe you should be checking up on THAT instead of red herrings about Palin.

Maybe he means the 2nd one with Couric - the one where McCain tries to do all the talking for Palin, like a father sitting in on his his teenage kid's job interview down at Burger King. Thus making her look like a moron.
