mamajumps 0 #1 September 30, 2008 http://www.theledger.com/article/20080929/NEWS/809290327 LUSBY, Md. | A mother told police that child-sized human remains uncovered in her basement freezer were those of her two adopted daughters and police think she is responsible for their deaths. Police were investigating an abuse complaint Saturday when they discovered the remains encased in ice. The mother told investigators that they had been in her southern Maryland home for at least seven months, and police said they are considering the case a homicide. "We have reason to believe that's the two children in the freezer," Lt. Bobby Jones of Calvert County Sheriff's Office said Monday. "We believe that the mother who adopted the two children is responsible for it." Autopsies would need to be completed before they know for sure the remains are of the girls, who would be ages 9 and 11. Deputies made the gruesome discovery in the home in Lusby, about 50 miles southeast of Washington, D.C. They were there with a search warrant to investigate the treatment of a girl who had run away and "showed signs of extreme abuse and neglect," the sheriff's department said. The girl's mother, 43-year-old Renee Bowman, has been arrested, and a judge has ordered her held without bail. She is charged with first-degree child abuse in the beating of the runaway 7-year-old, who was found wandering in the neighborhood wearing only a blood- and feces-soaked T-shirt. The girl escaped from a locked bedroom by jumping out a second-story window, and Bowman admitted beating her with a "hard-heeled shoe," officials said. Bowman told detectives she brought the remains in the freezer with her to Lusby when she moved from Rockville in February. Bowman has not been charged in the older girls' deaths. Just a thought. mentally ill or not, freezing your adopted kids has to strike a chord in your body as wrong somehow. I mean she isn't frozen? She doesn't see the frozen kid section at the grocery store. Nope I don't buy it. If she was living a life, house, car, grocery shopping, she knew what the f was up. She'll still plead insanity, I hope they strap her to a bed and pump her full of meds for the rest of her life. That makes it allright does it?Sometimes i feel too much attention is given to the rights of the (foster)parents to have children and too little to the rights of the child to have a good quality of life. I know there are lots of conditions foster parents have to meet, but still - some people are unfit to have children, natural or adopted. jtval 0 #19 October 1, 2008 I'll go one further. Shut up, fool. There. You don't expect everyone out there to be as forgiving as you do you? This women may have been mentally ill. BUT in some point during that 7 months she must've been in sound mind enought to realize that her children were dead AND in the freezer. THAT is the reason why the illness defense doesn't hold (at least in my world.) So, coming here and crying politically correctness won't be taken lightly by some of us. The .22 cent bullet comment may have your panties in a bunch but the cry for justice is what you should be taking from this thread not the one comment that bothers you. BTW- I semi agree with catfish hunter. I say we need justice so she deserves a trial.... but IF she if found guilty she needs to be put to death. Of course, someone may have planted to two bodies there and we will never find out the truth but the mental illness defense is a weak one. ANYONE who would do that IS mentally ill. It doesn't give you freedom from civic responsibility. My photos My Videos
Andy9o8 2 #20 October 1, 2008 QuoteANYONE who would do that IS mentally ill. It doesn't give you freedom from civic responsibility. Actually.... Criminal culpability depends upon mens rea, or "guilty mind". The insanity defense is truly a defense to mens rea, and thus it really is a defense from civic responsibility. Your visceral reaction against it is quite common; and in fact, that's the reason why - in the real world, not just a few notorious cases in the news - an insanity defense is extremely difficult to prove at trial. jtval 0 #22 October 1, 2008 So you think someone who is of sound mind could do something like that? Tha act, in and of itself, shows that there is something wrong with their way of thinking.(which many people equate to insanity) It still doesn't relieve them of the responsibility but if youre trying to tell me that ANYONE is capable of that then we are more fucked than I' d like to believe. Her guilty mind was proven by the fact that she hid the bodies. Her illness, temporary or not, was proven by that fact that she could kill a child. That "insanity" defense Is IMO only possible in the event that someone has no understanding of what they did. I.E. a mentally retarded person. (that's an example not a 100% blanket staement) Think George from "of mice and men." He was incapable of understanding his actions 100% of the day. I would assume that if this woman was able to adopt that she had passed multiple checks and balances. As Far as "my" visceral reaction...I think you may need to read my post again. I never said we should beat her with a hammer. I agree with the death penalty in cases like this (as I said before) if she if found guilty. There is no rehabilitation for someone whose "visceral reaction" is to kill her kids that she more than likely fought hard to gain custody of. I was annoyed by your comment that seemed to me to say "let's give the woman a break." So, let's say this story is true and she in fact killed those children and froze them then moved to a new location and ensured she kept those bodies frozen. What do you think would be a proper judgement? My photos My Videos

Its nothing to do with being a 'hair shirt'(whatever the hell that means) I've seen many cases of child abuse in which I have taken part in the investigative process. Sometimes it was the parent other times it was someone you'd never have suspected and sometimes it was just an accident. The point is you don't know who did it until the evidence has been examined and tested. Its simply about justice. When an author is too meticulous about his style, you may presume that his mind is frivolous and his content flimsy.
