Even through all the Bush years, I only know of one couple who actually made the move to Canada for that reason. Honostly these days.. if you claim that you are a politician, in my eyes.. you already have 2 strikes against you, no matter what party you are affiliated with. Im tired of the standard rhetoric, the laudry list of ficticious statements that seem to be thrown about so easily by those put into positions of power. No matter who ends up in office.. they will have one heck of a mess to clean up! With that said, I still believe that we live in the greatest country in the world, where we do have a much larger set of freedoms than most. Freedoms that are increasingly coming under attack, all in the name of homeland security or financial stability. Wake up people! Encourage all of age to vote! Andrewwhyte 1 #65 October 22, 2008 I doubt many Americans actually get up and leave because of the election results. What may happen is a shift in resident-alien populations. I have met many Canadians who have quit the US over the last few years because the cultural differences have widened. Whether this anecdotal data represents a true trend I am not sure, but it certainly felt that way, particularly after the second Bush win. Since Canada is the country with the smallest cultural gap with Americans I can only guess that the trend would be more pronounced for other resident-aliens. Another area is foreign students. There was some talk a few years ago about the increased opportunities Canadian Universities had to attract quality grad students and faculty from countries where US admission was either more difficult or perceived to be less attractive. Are there other resident-aliens (current or potential) who would stream the other direction? I would presume so but (just so nerdgirl doesn't rip me to shreds ) I have no data. The largest three cities in the country are like being in the United Nations (since we opened our doors to immigrants from every nation, we have it all here now ... you know when something happens in some part of the world there will be people from that nation demonstrating saying Canada isn't helping them ... we are kings of the special interest groups and 2nd to none when it comes to whining). Plus in so called "Red Neck" Alberta I happen to live in an area of Calgary that is dominated by the Chinese. Walk around my local grocery store and 10 out of 20 people are Chinese (with many of them actually speaking Cantonese or Mandarin, some don't even know English), 7 out of 20 would be Caucasian and the remaining 3 out of 20 would be some other race. For the most part we all peacefully co-exist with each other, but we don't interact and inter mingle as much as you may think. I am a friend of the USA, but it would be nice for a change for some of you folks to observe what is happening outside of your borders before you begin telling us what the rest of the world is like.
